The Levelland Lobos have wrapped up preseason play and have their eyes set on the Plainview Bulldogs. Levelland will hit the road for their season opener Friday at 7:30 p.m. “I thought our preseason went well,” said Levelland Head Coach Lyle Leong. “I think as a team, we grew a lot and learned a lot over the last two weeks.
“I am excited for the regular season to start. Overall, I am happy with how well we performed and finished in those two scrimmages,” he added. scrimmage, the Lobos’ ability to make decisions on the fly cut down on mistakes “I think eliminating mistakes is the biggest growth I saw in the team between scrimmage one and two. We made way less mistakes in our second,” stated Leong. “We also picked up our intensity and understood urgency a lot more.”
Momentum carrying over from their two scrimmages is expected by coach Leong and his staff.
“I think momentum carrying over will definitely play a big part in Fridays’ game. We have gained confidence in our two scrimmages. The guys now feel they can a play at a varsity level,” said Leong.
“We want guys to know this is where they are supposed to be and that they can play with anyone on our schedule,” he stated..
Team spirits are high as the Lobos prepare for their first road test of the year “As a whole, our team morale is good,” said the coach. “Everyone feels like we are a family and we hold each other accountable. The guys know they have a job to do for themselves and their teammates.
‘So, again, I think have good morale and we understand how important everyone’s job is on the team, whether it’s every play or one play,” Leong continued.
“We are all equally important,” he added. “We need everyone on this team doing their job for us to have any type of success this season. Coach Leong believes a big road win for the Lobos could possibly set t he tone for the season. “I think a big road win would set the tone for us. It would show the guys their hard work is paying off,’ stated Leong. “It would be a confidence boost for us. It again would let our kids know they are supposed to be here.” Now, I am not saying it would define our season, but would be a huge momentum boost,” he added. Coach Leong believes his team has to win the turnover battle on offense. “Taking care of the ball will be huge for our offense. Who ever has the least amount of turnovers will win the game in my opinion,” Leong said. Senior quarterback Konner Alexander, Marco Guillen, Ben Alverado and Dillon Hernandez are expected to lead the Lobos’ offense. On the defensive side of things, Levelland wants to limit big plays. We can’t give up big plays. I think we all know football plays are going to happen for both. If they move the ball up the field that’s fine, but we can’t let them move it with big plays,” the coach concluded Ladarian Jordan, Juan Gonzalez and Alverado will be flying all over the field for the Lobos defensively.
