Morton drops district opener

The Morton Indians dropped their district opener at home 22-2 to the Plains Cowboys in UIL Class 2A-2 Region 1 District 4 high school football action last Friday. The Indians are classification 1A, but have chosen to play up for an 11 man football schedule and have struggled with injuries as well. Morton Head Football Coach Brian Ramsey said, “Plains played a good game. Their coaches did a good job preparing them.” “We are still a young team and learning,” he added. Morton’s only points of the game came with 4:36 left in the half when the Indians, trailing 8-0, caught Plains’ Gavin Broome in the end-zone. Broome tried to dump the ball off, but it was intercepted in the end-zone by a Morton defender.

The officials ruled the ball had already been whistled dead and called a safety. Plains scored a second touchdown at the half-time buzzer, when Groome found Adrian Contreras open for a 26 yard touchdown at the buzzer giving the Cowboys a 16-2 lead.

The final nail in Morton’s loss came on a one yard run by Jhoan Menjivar early in the fourth quarter.

Morton held Plains to 158 yards total offense. With the exception of three drives, the Cowboys could not get anything going.

The Indians, however, couldn’t get anything going either and wound up with 29 yards total offense Alex Lopez went 0-for-5 passing. E.J. Rivas had four carries for 20 yards.

Andreas Bejarno had eight carries for eight yards. Lopez had five carries for seven yards.

Christian Enriquez had three carries for minus three yards and Xavier Ramon had a single carry for minus three yards.

The Indians fall to 0-1 in district, 2-4 overall and travel to Ropesville on Friday for a 7 p.m. district match-up with the Ropes Eagles.
