This Thursday, October 20, Hockley County School Employees Credit Union (HCSECU) will join over 56,000 credit unions around the world to celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day. The theme of ICU Day 2022 is “Empower Your Financial Future with a Credit Union.” ICU Day highlights the many ways that credit unions across the world help members improve their financial health and wellbeing.
HCSECU will be celebrating with give aways, snacks, information about all our new products and lots more. HCSECU was founded in June of 1954. The first building was a desk drawer in the old High School located where Levelland Intermediate is now. HCSECU has only had two managers in its nearly 70 years.
Duke Sonnenberg was manager for 40 years, retiring in 1994. Russell Vest was hired in July of that year and is still CEO today.
HCSECU was founded for Hockley County School employees, we have members from all school districts in Hockley county.
In 2018, HCSECU opened membership to City of Levelland employees and Hockley County employees. In 2020, HCSECU opened membership to Covenant Hospital Levelland employees. Once again HCSECU opened membership in 2021 to SPCAA.
With the added select employee groups (SEGs) the Credit Union membership has grown to over 3400 members to date.
HCSECU is working on ways to continue membership expansion. Being a member of a Credit Union is beneficial in so many ways, but the most important is that you have a share in the CU and that makes any Credit Union locally owned!
Credit unions were built on the principle of “people helping people.” We’ve seen that philosophy in action for more than 100 years, with credit unions providing access to affordable financial products and striving to meet the needs of under served communities.
