The Whiteface Antelopes advanced to the Area Round of the UIL Class 1A-1 Region II High School Football Playoffs with a 56-6 Bi-District win over the Van Horn Eagles last Friday in Rankin.
The game lasted only one half due to the 45 point rule which in six man football requires the game to be called whenever one team is ahead by 45 points or more at or after half-time.
Whiteface forced the Eagles to turnover on downs, then took over on the Van Horn 38-yardline for a drive that culminated in an 11-yard run from Julio Borunda and an 8-0 Whiteface lead after Damien Castenada’s PAT with 6:28 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles started on their own 35-yard-line on the next drive and went nowhere.
Joel Fortner’s second big fourth down stop forced a turnover on downs and gave the Antelopes the ball on the Van Horn 35-yard- line.
Borunda took the ball in on the first play from scrimmage for a 16-0 Whiteface lead after the kick with 4:28 left in the first quarter.
Van Horn’s third try ended with a pick six from Ethan Kauffman, another good kick by Castaneda who went 7-for-7 on the night, and a 24-0 Whiteface lead with 2:17 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a 40yard and a 45-yard touchdown from Kauffman and a 71-yard touchdown from Borunda before Van Horn got on the board with a 48-yard run by Bryce Virdell.
The Van Horn kick was blocked for a 48-6 Whiteface lead with 3:31 left in the half.
The Antelopes took over for a drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah Rendon to Jeremias Chavez for a 56-6 lead with two seconds left in the half.
Jeremiah Rendon went 2-for-3 for 61 yards and a touchdown. He also had two carries for 32 yards.
Borunda had four carries for 117 yards and three touchdowns. Kauffman had 12 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Brighton Scoggins had a single six yard carry.
Chavez had both receptions for 61 yards with a touchdown.
Scoggins had six tackles. Borunda have 5 ½. Auscar Gandara and Kauffman had 4 ½ each. Kauffman also had a pick six.
Fortner had 3 ½. Jeremiah Soliz had two. Chavez and Gavin Baker had one each. Jaxon Heflin had an assist. The Antelopes will face Rankin in the area round of the playoffs on Friday in Gail. Game time is 6 p.m.
