Las Fidelis Club supports Helping Open Door, Preserve the Pollinators

The GFWC Texas, Las Fidelis Study Club met October 25, in the home of Jolene Sweeney.

The topic of participating in the efforts to “Preserve the Pollinators” which is the theme and main project of the state GFWC Texas President, Billie Williams, was discussed. It was decided to support this project by purchasing a beehive which will be matched with two additional hives.

The club will send hives and bee colonies along with training to a family in need. This will not only help the bee population but by purchasing a beehive from Heifer International, a family in an impoverished nation will be provided with the means to make additional money to use for expenses such as education and medical care.

Helping Open Door, an organization that helps the homeless and victims of sex trafficking, with Christmas was also discussed. Plans were made to contact Open Door to determine how Las Fidelis could best help.

The Program for the afternoon was given by Kelly Buckner, the Journalism teacher at Levelland High School.

Buckner has a college degree in photography and has worked as a professional photographer and has won many awards for her photography.

She gave the club members many suggestions about how to take better photos, touching on topics such as the Rule of Thirds and what will and will not make for award winning photos.

She also gave suggestions on taking pictures with the camera on phones and pointed out that to take a sharp photograph that can be enlarged to the required 8 x 10 that is necessary to enter the GFWC Photography Contest, at a high resolution is necessary.

Buckner shared how the resolution can be changed in your phone camera and urged the members to check to see what resolution that their phones were set on and to make the change, if necessary.

The club members practiced taking pictures of Sweeney’s back yard.

Members present included: Kaye Brown, Georgia Decker, Paula Dunn, Maggie Husen, Susanne Leggitt, Betsy Moreland, Tina O’Connor, Sandra Stephenson and Jolene Sweeney
