Local high school boys and girls varsity basketball teams competed at tournaments across the south plains. last weekend
Anton
The Anton Bulldogs high school boys’ basketball team struggled at the Smyer Invitational Basketball Tournament last weekend.
Anton started with a 65-21 loss to the Smyer Bobcats on Thursday, then fell to Southcrest 54-22 on Friday night.
They lost to Frenship 82-45 on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are off until December 19 when they host Dawson at 6 p.m.
The Anton High School girls’ basketball team fell 37-16 in the consolation round of the Smyer Invitational Basketball Tournament last Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs fell to Smyer 57-39 in the opening round on Thursday, but then bounced back on Friday with a 56-42 win over Friona to advance to the consolation round.
The Anton girls are in Cotton Center on Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
Ropes
The Ropes Eagles high school basketball team took second place at the Borden County Invitational Basketball Tournament in Gail last Saturday with a 53-36 loss to the Whiteface Antelopes.
The Eagles downed Robert Lee 53-22 on Thursday, then defeated Roscoe 36-34 Friday to advance to the championship round.
The Eagles will host Petersburg Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Ropes Lady Eagles took a hard-fought 36-34 overtime win from the Whiteface Lady Lopes in high school girls’ basketball action at the Borden County Invitational Tournament in Gail last Saturday.
The Lady Eagles downed Robert Lee 64-37 on Thurday then beat the host Borden County Lady Coyotes 54-49 to advance to the championship round.
The Lady Eagles will host Sundown on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Smyer
The Smyer Bobcats high school boys’ basketball team took a 56-30 loss from the Wink Wildcats last Saturday to finish second in the Smyer Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Smyer’s Brayden White was named to the All-Tournament team as well.
Smyer defeated Anton 65-21 on Thursday night, then downed Friona 38-34 in the second round to reach the championship.
The Bobcats will be in Sundown on Friday for a 6:15 p.m. game.
The Smyer Lady Cats went 12 in their home tournament last weekend in high school girls’ basketball action.
Maegan Smith was named to the All-Tournament team as well.
The Lady Cats downed Anton 57-39 on Thursday night, but dropped a tough game to the Shallowater JV girls on Friday 5146.
They then fell to Roosevelt 56-33 on Saturday in the third place game.
The Lady Cats will be in Olton on Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
Whiteface
The Whiteface Lady Lopes high school girls’ basketball team took a heartbreaking 36-34 overtime loss to the Ropes Lady Eagles in the championship round of the Borden County Invitational Tournament in Gail Saturday night.
In order to make the championship, the Lady Lopes had to beat Westbrook 54-30 on Thursday.
Then on Friday, they beat Coahoma, 41-36.
The Lady Lopes will be in Morton on Friday, while the Lady Eagles will host Sundown. Both games start at 6:30 p.m.
The Whiteface Antelopes boys’ high school basketball team finished the Borden County Invitational Tournament 3-0 and tournament champions with a 5336 win over the Ropes Eagles last Saturday in Gail.
To get to the championship, the Whiteface boys’ had to beat O’Donnell 60-51 in overtime on Thursday, then down Coahoma 46-42 on Friday.
The Antelopes will host Springlake-Earth on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. game.
Whitharral
The Whitharral Panthers fell just one point short of winning their home tournament championship with a 42-41 last second loss to the All Saints Patriots in high school boys’ basketball action Saturday night.
The Panthers’ Nomar Gomez and Jeryn Ellerd were named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
Whitharral, coming in on short practice time due to a deep run in the football playoffs, started the tournament on Thursday with a fill-in game with Bovina in place of the Petersburg Buffaloes who cancelled at the last minute.
Bovina was allowed to move on as Whitharral took on the Springlake-Earth Wolverines, in their scheduled game at 7:30 p.m. and downed them, 71-65.
Friday night, the Panthers downed Patton Springs 84-26 to advance to the finals.
Whitharral will be in Lorenzo on Friday for an early game at 3:15 p.m.
The Whitharral Lady Panthers finished fourth in their home tournament with a 39-32 loss to the Bovina Lady Mustangs in the consolation final Saturday night.
Whitharral opened the tournament Thursday with a 4835 loss to the Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines.
Friday night, they downed Crosbyton 47-31.
The Lady Panthers will be in Meadow Friday night for a 6 p.m. game.
