Several high school boys and girls high school varsity basketball teams competed in holiday tournaments during the Christmas break.
Bulldogs
The Anton Bulldog high school basketball team went 1-3 in the Advanced Graphix bracket of the Caprock Invitational Basketball Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ weekend.
The Bulldogs started off with a rough 89-17 loss to Grapevine Faith Christian, ranked third among Class 5A in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
They fell to Class 2A Seagraves 71-26 in the second round, then downed Class 2A Sudan 70- 48 before falling to Class 2A Ralls 56-36 in the final round.
The Bulldogs took on Whitharral Friday in district action.
Lady Bulldogs
The Anton Lady Bulldogs high school girls’ basketball team went 1-3 in the United Supermarkets bracket of the Caprock Invitational Basketball Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ Weekend.
The UIL Class 1A Lady Bulldogs opened against Shallowater, ranked 16th in UIL Class 3A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, losing, 74-19.
They fell 40-28 to Lubbock Trinity, then downed Denton Calvary, ranked 22nd in Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class 3A by MaxPreps 42-27 before falling to Diamond Valley, an Australian club team, 53-32.
The Anton girls traveled to Whitharral on Friday.
Bobcats
The Smyer Bobcat high school basketball team struggled in the Double T Smiles bracket of the Caprock Invitational Basketball Tournament over the New Years’ weekend, going 0-4.
The Class 2A Bobcats faced the Lorenzo Hornets, ranked eighth among Class 1A schools by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in the opening round, losing 71-23.
The second round found them up against Denton Calvary, ranked 24th in 3A among the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches
Calvary downed them 46-33 followed by a 54-48 loss to UIL Class 3A Henrietta
Class 3A Merkel was the final team on the schedule.
The Bobcats fell to the Badgers, 56-30.
The Bobcats were in Floydada on Friday evening.
Lady Cats
The Smyer Lady Cats high school girls’ basketball team went 1-3 in the MCM Elegante Hotel Suites bracket of the Caprock Invitational Basketball Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ weekend.
The UIL Class 2A Lady Cats opened with a 47-43 loss to Class 3A Tulia, but bounced back to beat Class 3A San Angelo TLCA, 34-30.
They fell to Quanah, ranked 25th in Class 2A by MaxPreps, 54- 30 and lost the final round 42- 36 to Lubbock Kingdom Prep Academy, ranked 10th among Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools by MaxPreps.
The Smyer girls traveled to Floydada on Friday.
Friday. Antelopes
The Whiteface Antelope boys’ high school basketball team went 1-3 in the Eula/Clyde Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament over the New Years’ Weekend.
The UIL Class 1A Antelopes opened against Tolar – ranked 19th in Class 2A – falling 59-44 on Wednesday.
On Thursday, they fell to Class 3A Breckenridge, 49-46. Friday morning found them up against no. 25 in Class 1A Eula. They lost another nail biter 48-46 before beating Class 2A Eldorado 64-49 in the final game.
The Antelopes hosted Whitharral on December 10th .
Lady Lopes
The Whiteface Lady Lopes girls’ high school basketball team went 3-1 on their way to a second place finish in the Eula/Clyde Holiday Classic over the New Years’ weekend.
Two members of the team, Allison Martha and Emma Ayers were named to the All-Tournament Team
The Whiteface girls, ranked 15th in UIL Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and 12th by MaxPreps, fell to Stamford – ranked 16th by MaxPreps in Class 2A – 35-32 in the championship on Friday.
They opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 59-30 win over Class 3A Ballinger.
On Thursday, they beat Class 3A Breckenridge 59-39 in an 8 a.m. game, then downed the host Eula (no. 20, MaxPreps) 46- 31 in an evening game.
The Lady Lopes hosted Whitharral on January 10th .
Panthers
The Whitharral Panther high school boys’ basketball team went 3-1 and won the consolation round of the Double T Smiles bracket in the Caprock Invitational Basketball Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ weekend.
Panther Kaden Smith was selected to the all-tournament team as well.
Whitharral, ranked 20th in UIL Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, downed class 2A Quanah 49-46 in overtime for the final win.
They faced Class 3A Slaton in round one, defeating them 46- 30, then fell to no. 22 in Class 3A San Angelo TLCA 56-20 in round two.
They bounced back with a win over Class 3A Alpine 52-49 to advance to the final round.
The Panthers hosted Anton Friday evening.
