Area teams focused on district

District basketball for area basketball teams continued for several teams.

Lady Eagles

The Ropes Lady Eagles, ranked ninth in UIL Class 2A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, dominated the visiting Tahoka Lady Bulldogs 64-30 in UIL District 5-2A high school girls’ basketball action last Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and 2712 at half-time.

A huge third quarter ended with Ropes leading 52-19.

Ava Grace Falls had 18 points to lead all scorers. Tatum Melton had 16 and Aubrey Bandy had 12.

Allie Wilson had seven points. Bailey Turner had three. Bree Stumbo, Heather McNabb, Alex Crunk and Campbell Latta had two each.

The Lady Eagles are in Lorenzo on Tuesday for a nondistrict game at 6:15 p.m.

Eagles

A fourth quarter surge couldn’t save the Ropes Eagles from a 47-38 loss to the visiting Tahoka Bulldogs in UIL District 5-2A basketball action last Tuesday.

Both teams struggled to score in the front half. Ropes led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter and 13-11 at half-time.

Tahoka came out on fire in the third, while the Eagles were flat.

By the end of the period, Tahoka led 31-16.

Ropes put 22 up in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t keep Tahoka from putting up 16 to stay ahead.

The Eagles will be in Lorenzo to face the no. 8 (Class 1A) Hornets on Tuesday in a nondistrict game at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Panthers

The Whitharral girls’ high school Lady Panther basketball team downed the host Cotton Center Lady Elks 30-18 last Tuesday.

While both teams are in UIL District 7-1A, the Lady Panthers have elected to play a JV schedule due to lack of numbers, so the game is considered an official forfeit.

The Lady Panthers led 12-4 at the end of the first period and 16-15 at half-time.

They led 22-17 at the end of three.

Tyler Parkinson had 10 points, four rebounds and an assist. Avery McCain had nine points and nine rebounds.

Madi Chavez had seven points, three rebounds and three assists.

Trinity Coronado had two points and two rebounds.

Kalyn Bates had two rebounds and Madyson Nickelson had a single board.

The Whitharral girls will be in Whiteface on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game.

Panthers

The Whitharral Panthers, ranked 21st in UIL Class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, dominated the host Cotton Center Elks 72-18 last Tuesday in district 7-1A action.

The game was never in doubt. Whitharral led 21-5 in the first quarter and 42-7 at half-time.

By the end of the third period, the score was 58-13.

Shamadrick Weaver led all scorers with 20 points. Kaden Smith had 11. Nomar Gomez had 10. Brent Robinson and Jeryn Ellerd had nine each. Jack Griffin had six points. Jarrett Fryar had four and Dawson Rodgers had three.

The Panthers will be in Whiteface for district action on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Bobcats

The Smyer Bobcats survived a tough home game against UIL District 6-2A opponent Hale Center, coming away with a 56-54 win last Tuesday.

The Bobcats led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, but Hale Center came back in the second to take a 26-25 lead into half-time.

The Bobcats regained the lead in the third quarter 41-39, then it was nip and tuck all the way through the fourth.

Landon Polk had 19 points. Ethan Morris had 11. Cameron Gutierrez had eight. Shawn Barrett had six.

Brayden Wade had five points. Cody Armes had four. Jordan Bartlett had two and Drew Overstreet had one.

The Bobcats host Sudan for a 7:30 district game on Tuesday.

Maidens

The Morton Maidens took a 21-5 lead in the first quarter over the visiting Amherst Lady Bulldogs and never looked back on their way to a 60-34 win in UIL District 7-1A high school girls’ basketball action last Tuesday.

The Maidens led 31-18 at half-time and 40-24 at the end of three periods.

Malory Alvarez and Lali Navarett had 18 points each. Chloe Enriquez had seven. Alexiah Garza had six. Amberlyne Hernandez had five points. Blaise Garza had four. Kayleigh Boggs had two.

The Maidens will host Cotton Center on Jan. 13 for district action at 6 p.m.

LadyLopes

The Whiteface Lady Lopes started slow, but wound up to a 52-17 road win over the Anton Lady Bulldogs in UIL District 7-1A high school girls basketball action last Tuesday.

Whiteface trailed the Lady Bulldogs 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, but were firmly in the lead at 23-9 by half-time.

The score at the end of the third quarter was 42-15.

Allison Martha led all scorers with 22 points. Jaedyn Rector had nine. Emma Ayers and Tymmyah Olenga had eight each. Morgan Waggoner had a trey and Kylie Deavours had two points.

The Lady Lopes will host Whitharral in district action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
