As someone who has never been involved with FFA, stock shows or agriculture in general, getting to cover stock shows has been an experience to say the least.
With the Hockley County Junior Live Stock Show happening this past week, I learned that I need to start brushing up on the different types of breeds of all the animals shown.
If someone told me they show a rabbit, I would leave it at that. I wouldn’t ask about the breed, coat, weight and build of the animal.
It was impressive to watch these kids from all around Hockley County show their animals and be able to talk confidently to their judge about their animal.
I was impressed and several judges were impressed by our kids as well.
For me, the neatest thing I saw was the ag mechanics projects. The number of projects and detail put into each one was amazing.
For every show there was, there were plenty of kids who could explain either their project or animal and be confident in what they knew and shared.
Talking with several kids, I was simply curious about an animal or project and I was given an encyclopedia’s worth of knowledge about every one.
Additionally, the judges, announcers and workers of the stock show were great.
Coming in green to all of it, I was able to ask questions and get clarity on what was happening with ease.
Those are great people taking care of the event and making sure it happens without a hitch.
Congratulations to all the kids that competed in all shows.
