The City of Levelland City Council moved forward with two new ordinances that had previously been approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
Holding a regularly scheduled meeting Monday, the council held a public hearing before making a decision for both ordinances.
Ordinance No. 1069 amended the comprehensive zoning ordinance for the City of Levelland, creating a new zoning district classification that will be titled SF1-CA.
The new classification Restricted Family District Carports Allowed, establishes and defines the new zoning district and changes certain SF-1 zoning districts.
In an earlier meeting this year, council approved a new carport ordinance but did not allow SF-1 zones to be included in the ordinance.
Citizens made their feelings toward the lack of SF-1 zones being allowed to build carports known to the council during public and opening comments of multiple council meetings.
The council recommended the Planning and Zoning Commission find a solution.
Chief Building Inspector Joe Shedd presented the ordinance and the updated areas that would allow carports for the SF-1 allowed zones which would become SF1-CA.
The included areas that would become SF1-CA include: The Crestview area which covers all of Michael Street.
Capitol Terrace, all of Douglas Street are is included.
All of the Kauffman area. The Lea and Brown areas which include the 300 and 400 blocks of Pine, Hicks, the south side of Cactus and Hickory.
Breshear is included with the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of Hickory and Poplar.
In College Heights, the 400 and 500 blocks of Holly are included.
In Colonial Heights, the 100 block of Cedar, Detroit, Elgin and Flint are included.
For the Wills area, the 600 block of Cherry, Cactus and the 600 block of N. Ellgin.
In the Western Meadows area, the 100 and 200 blocks of Avenue T, Avenue U and Avenue V are included.
For the Cherry Addition, the 300 block of Cherry and Cactus are included.
Following the public hearing, the council unanimously approved the ordinance. A second reading will need to be had for the ordinance will go into affect.
The second ordinance discussed during the meeting was Ordinance No. 1070 regarding the changing of the zoning classification for the lot located at 211 Clubview Drive in Levelland.
Shedd explained the property is physically too small to have any type of residential building placed on the lot.
Additionally, he added the lot has contained a business since 1995 regardless of the business itself.
After being advised by City Attorney Matt Wade, the city staff determined it would be best utilized as a commercial property but it would not be rezoned. After holding a public hearing on the subject during the meeting, the council unanimously agreed to change the zone from a SF-2 to a B-2 zone for the property.
To round out the meeting, the council made the decision to accept a bid for sale of the 1.75 acre tract of land located on the northeast corner of West Avenue and Equalizer Road.
City Manager Brandon Anderson explained that he had been approached by Renegade at the beginning of his tenure as city manager about the possibility of selling the acreage to allow the company to put a permanent structure on the land.
The lease does not allow any permanent structures to be built on the land.
During the December 19, meeting, the council authorized the city staff to bid the property out with one bid being received January 2 from Renegade for $20,000.
Anderson was informed by Renegade that their plans for the land are to build a new shop/ building and that it would be an opportunity to bring in potentially 15 new jobs.
The council unanimously approved the bid and settled on Renegade taking care of the closing costs.
Both Councilman Jim Myatt and Councilwoman Buxkemper shared their excitement with the remaining council about the sale. 20 PAGES
