The Whiteface Lady Lopes earned their fifth straight district championship with a 67-11 domination of the visiting Amherst Lady Bulldogs in UIL district 71A high school girls’basketball action last Tuesday.
Whiteface went undefeated in district and are ranked 13 th in class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball coaches.
The Lady Lopes led 23-0 at the end of the first quarter and 423 at half-time.
The third quarter saw Whiteface up 54-6.
Allison Martha had 18 points to lead all scorers. Tymmyah Olenga had 13. Ariana Soliz had nine. Morgan Waggoner had eight points. Anais and Abi Soliz had seven each. Ximena Lucero had three and Kylie Deavours had two.
The Lady Lopes will face Wellman-Union in a 6:30 p.m. game on Monday night at Lubbock Christian High School in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs.
Maidens
The Morton Maidens finished the UIL high school girls’ basketball regular season with a 56-33 road win over the Cotton Center Lady Elks last Tuesday. The win puts the Maidens at 5-5 in district 7-1A and tied with Meadow for third place.
The teams were scheduled to play a seeding game last night with results unavailable at the time of this printing.
Morton was down 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, but caught fire in the second, taking a 31- 15 lead into half-time. They built on that in the third for a 4620 lead at the end of that period.
Lali Navarett had 23 points. Clarissa Holland had 12. Kayleigh Boggs had 10. Malory Alvarez had eight. Chloe Enriquez had three.
Indians
The Morton Indians kept the pressure up on their way to a 4427 UIL district 7-1A high school boys’ basketball road win over the Cotton Center Elks last Tuesday.
Morton’s win also marked a milestone for junior Alex Lopez who passed 1,000 career points.
Morton led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter and 22-9 at halftime. The Indians were up 36-13 in the third and easily fended off Cotton Center rally attempt in the fourth.
Lopez led all scorers with 17 points. Andres Bejarno had nine. Lane Lyon had seven. Vicente Montoya had four. Xavier Ramon had three points and A.J. Mendoza and Anibal Casteneda had two each.
Morton finished the regular season by hosting Whiteface on Tuesday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
Lady Cats
The Smyer Lady Cats finished their season with a tough 48-47 district 4-2A overtime win over the visiting Ralls Lady Jackrabbits in UIL high school girls’ basketball action last Tuesday.
The Lady Cats were down 82 at the end of the first period and 13-8 at half-time. They came back in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 26.
It was nip and tuck through the fourth with the final score tied at 41. Ralls made two baskets against one for the Lady Cats in the overtime, but free throws made the difference.
Ralls went 2-for-7 while Smyer went 5-for-8.
Bobcats
The Smyer Bobcats fell 52-42 to the visiting Ralls Jackrabbits last Tuesday in UIL district 4-2A high school boys’ basketball action last Tuesday.
The Bobcats trailed 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and 16-12 at half-time. Both teams got hot in the third quarter, but Smyer remained behind 34-24 and couldn’t make it up in the fourth.
Landon Polk had 17 points. Ethan Morris and Shawn Barrett had 10 each. Brayden Wade and Cameron Gutierrez had two apiece and Drew Overstreet had a freethrow.
The Bobcats will finish their season on the road against no. 13 Olton at 6:15 p.m.
Lady Eagles
The Ropes Lady Eagles finished their season with a 54-14 UIL district 5-2A road win over the Post Lady Lopes last Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles led 16-1 at the end of the first quarter, 34-2 at half-time and 43-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Campbell Latta had 13 points. Ava Grace Falls had 10. Kandis Rodriguez and Alex Crunk had eight each. Allie Wilson had seven points. Bailey Turner had four. Bree Stumbo and Heather McNabb had two each.
Ropes had qualified for postseason play. Opponents and times will be decided later.
Eagles
The Ropes Eagles parlayed a 31 point second quarter into a 7635 UIL district 5-2A road win over the Post Antelopes in high school boys’ basketball action last Tuesday.
The Eagles were tied with the Antelopes at 12 when the first quarter ended. Nate Brooks and Garrett Gilliam hit three treys each in the second, burying Post 43-22 at half-time.
The Eagles continued to roll in the second half, leading post 60-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Garrett Gilliam had 15 points. Brooks had 14. Kade Franklin and Brennan Bearden had 10 each. Tyler Gilliam had eight points. Braxxin Partington had six. Brady Bryan had five. Darren Kizer had four. E.J. Mendez and Reese Williams had two each.
The Eagles will finish the regular season by hosting Sundown on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
