Sugar Plum Gift Shop seeks volunteers

The Sugar Plum Gift Shop located at the Covenant Health Hospital of Levelland is currently looking for volunteers as well as opened to scholarship opportunities for college students.

Director of Operations Norma Rubalcalva explained that the auxiliary volunteers handle the operations of the gift shop and sell items to anyone who needs them regardless of personnel that work for the hospital or patients, family, friends, etc...

Rubalcava added that the volunteers and gift shop are there for the employees of the hospital.

There are times the volunteers purchase t-shirts, sweaters and different things for maybe a certain holiday, but they offer these items for the care givers.

Rubalcava explained that the volunteers and gift shop itself use the funds generated from the shop put the proceeds back into the hospital.

Some examples include new flooring in different areas of the hospital, new push carts that are now lockable, furniture, TV’s for rooms, vending machines, bedside tables for patient rooms, and a table for meetings and conferences.

“This group of individuals do amazing things for this hospital and not only for the care givers or only the patients, but for everyone involved,” said Rubalcava. “Additionally, one of the bigger things that are available is scholarship opportunities.”

Rubalcava and would like to encourage any care giver with children who are preparing for college to consider applying and seeing if there is an opportunity for additional scholarships. This semester’s recipients were Aaron Martinez and Hannah Hinojosa.

In deciding the scholarship recipients, the volunteers include their opinions as they hold a monthly meeting to discuss the scholarship applicants.

An ongoing tradition, the gift shop has been running since 1985.

The group currently consists of seven members and is actively looking for volunteers to work the gift shop.

With a handful of volunteers retiring and moving on, Rubalcava says there are plenty of open time slots available between the morning and afternoon.

A background check is necessary when applying to volunteer for the gift shop.
