Main Street honors Marigolds historic volunteer work

Levelland Main Street is honoring the Levelland Marigold’s, an organization that has 47 years of community volunteering under their belt.

Main Street will be honoring the Marigolds with a bench that will double as something the community can use as well as display how proud Main Street is of the group.

“The Levelland Main Street Project is proud to see another project come to completion that not only benefits our community and downtown visitors, but a women’s club that has 47 years of making the City of Levelland brighter,” said Main Street Manager Tania Moody.

The bench is one of the few, that sits in the shade against an inset, in front of the Hockley County Juvenile Probation Office, on Avenue G, downtown.

Moody explained that the location of the bench allows for a cool bench and shade to take refuge from the summer west Texas heat, day in and day out.

Adorning the of the bench middle is what Moody is calling a beautiful, and rugged plaque, much like the ladies whose names’ it bears.

“The founding members of this club are honored and will be cherished by so many that stop to sit, read the plaque and stay a while and enjoy the planter filled to the brim with Marigolds, that will soon take its rightful place in front of that bench,” said Moody.

The bench was delivered in July of last year, but the group has been waiting on the plaque to be delivered and installed.

“The completion of this project is one near and dear to my heart,” said Moody. “These ladies have always been a force to be reckoned with. They will outwork you, out fund raise you, certainly out-cook you and do it all with a smile and a volunteer spirit that shines brightly.”

The official ribbon cutting and dedication will take place at 1:30 p.m. April 13 at the bench location.

Moody shared her appreciation to the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, who is facilitating the event.

Founding mothers of the Marigolds include: Ruth Morgan, Marjean Wilhite, Gladys Bierman Joan Henderson, Floriene Stern, Zelda Johnson, Mary Lou Murphy Lou Ann Crawley, Sharon Hicks, Brenda Jones, Pearl Bowman, Sue Young, Ruth Warren, Geneva Parkinson, Maxine Dunn, Del Kirby, Audrie Robinson and Jean Brown.

“Like many a project, there are many hands that helped it come to fruition and this one is no different,” explained Moody. “We want to say a special thanks to the Hockley County Endowment, because we could not realize this vision, without their help, support and the grant that made this possible.”

Moody encourages community members and travelers to make their way to the Levelland downtown area to realize how much the group has down for Levelland and Hockley County.

“You can’t go very far without seeing or feeling their hand of generosity and passion for our community,” said Moody.

They have funded benches downtown, the mosaic handrails were funded in part by a grant from the HCE, and we’re so lucky to be reaping the benefits of seeds planted by the likes of Sycily Lattimore, George R. Keeling and so many others, that have now since passed.”
