Keep Levelland Beautiful had their regular meeting Monday at City Hall to review their previous events as well as get the word out about what was along the horizon.
The Community Cleanup held earlier this month would prove to be one of the healthiest iterations of the event in terms of volunteers and the amount of trash collected.
Exactly 78 volunteers met to clean up portions of Highway 114, all together collecting more than 2,000 pounds of trash. Todate, the events have incorporated more than 800 volunteers collecting 69,000 pounds of trash.
In the electronic recycling event that took place the same day, KLB and their partners were able to fill six pallets with old or scrap electronics for disposal as well, a grand showing for a community of our size.
As for what’s on the horizon, Kelly Hancock, Special Projects Manager for the Chamber of Commerce was excited to enlighten the group about their Earth Day plans. Coming up on Friday, April 21st there will be several events running in town to celebrate: At 1 p.m. the Marigold Club will be planting their namesakes at the Chamber of Commerce location at 1101 Ave. H.
There will be a tree planting with the Rotary Club at 2 p.m. at Kauffman Park as well; and finally a presentation will be given by Kelly to any home-school participants who wish to attend about pollinator flowers at Bartlett Park at 3 p.m.
Also presented at this meeting were the ordinance violation numbers for the month, taken by Levelland Code Enforcement.
Last year, the months from February to April saw 60 violations including 18 high weed, grass violations, 21 property maintenance violations, seven substandard housing violations and more.
Due to the hard work of City Staff, those numbers were sharply reduced to 22 in the same time frame this year, with only five weed, grass violations, five property maintenance, and three substandard housing violations.
As the group is concerned with Levelland’s outward image, these numbers are given at every meeting so a course of action can be determined, and the reduction in violations encourage the group to expand their reach.
