It was an eventful Tuesday for the Levelland Lobo Baseball team as one of the senior leaders Wyatt Baccus signed his letter of intent to play baseball with the Wayland Baptist Pioneers next season.
Surrounded by teammates, coaches, family and friends, Baccus was thankful for the continued support of everyone in attendance.
Graduating this month, the senior will begin his college career majoring in business and begin off-season work under Pioneer Head Coach Todd Weldon and his staff.
With the help of Lobo Head Coach Chris Portwood and Assistant Coach Logan Tate, Baccus received a call from Coach Weldon’s staff and eventually took an official visit to the Plainview campus to get a feel for the program.
After watching a practice and getting a chance to tour the Wayland facilities, Baccus explained that he couldn’t be more excited to join the Pioneer ball club.
“Getting a chance to talk to the guys that are already on the team and program was great,” said Baccus. “They were nice and I got the sense that they were great guys who saw each other as family. There isn’t much more I could ask for when making the decision.”
Leaving the Lobo program as a senior leader, Baccus showed appreciation for his teammates he has grown up with.
“I’ve known a lot of these guys since we were little kids playing in little league and they have truly become my brothers,” said Baccus. “I have no doubt I’ll miss the younger guys and the guys I am graduating with, but I will continue to see them after this year. These guys mean the world to me.”
Baccus has been one of the building blocks for Coach Portwood’s squad of Lobos this season as he was utilized heavily throughout the infield defensively.
Offensively, Baccus was a constant force at the plate as he will always remember his walk-off hit against Estacado in extra innings to keep the Lobos in the playoff hunt.
Wrapping up his senior season, Baccus earned First Team All-District Infield.
