Sundown snags regional appearance

  • HEADED TO REGIONAL- The Sundown Roughnecks took the Clarendon Broncos 2-1 in the best of three UIL High School Baseball Area Championship in Floydada on Thursday and Saturday. Sundown lost game one 7-3 on Thursday, then won back-to-back games on Saturday 13-3 and 12-8 for the championship. Sundown will now face Ropes in the regional quarterfinal.     The Sundown Roughnecks took the Clarendon Broncos 2-1 in the best of three UIL High School Baseball Area Championship in Floydada on Thursday and Saturday.

    Sundown lost game one 7-3 on Thursday, then won back to back games on Saturday 13-3 and 12-8 for the championship.

    Game1

    Sundown fell behind 4-0 in the bottom of the second and trailed 6-0 at the end of the fourth inning.

    The Roughnecks managed a run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh, but wasn’t enough. Jaxon Rodriguez took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits with a strikeout and four walks over 3 1/3 innings.

    Rian Rose allowed one hit and one run with four strikeouts and a walk over his 2 2/3 innings of relief. Koy Torres had two runs on two hits.

    Jeffrey Rodrigues had a hit. Hunter Tindol had a run. Rodriguez had a hit and two RBIs. Isaac Lopez had an RBI.

    Game2

    Sundown jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings, then scored another six over the fourth and fifth to invoke the five-inning run rule on Clarendon in game two.

    Jeffrey Rodrigues took the win, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Isaac Lopez gave 1/3 inning of relief.

    Jayson Martinez had three runs and a hit. Koy Torres had two runs and a hit. Rodrigues had a run. Hunter Tindol had two runs and an RBI. Jaxon Rodriguez had two runs. Jaryn Flores had a run, a hit and an RBI.

    Rian Rose had a hit and two RBIs. Rayden Flores had two RBIs. Marcus Solis had a run and an RBI.

    Game3

    The Roughnecks led 7-0 at the end of the second inning, but Clarendon came back to take an 87 sixth inning lead in a rainsoaked game marked by weather delays. Sundown came back, however, with five runs in the top of the seventh inning.

    Isaac Lopez got the win with three hits for two runs, two strikeouts and two walks over 2 1/ 3 innings.

    Koy Torres gave up three hits and two runs with a strikeout and two walks over 3 2/3 innings and Rian Rose pitched on inning with two hits, four runs, a strikeout and two walks.

    Jayson Martines had two runs. Torres had three runs and a hit. Jeffrey Rodrigues had two runs, a hit and two RBIs.

    Hunter Tindol had three runs and a hit.

    Jaxon Rodriguez had a run, two hits and four RBIs. Jaryn Flores had a hit.

    Lopez had two hits and three RBIs. Rayden Flores had an RBI. Rian Rose had a hit.
