Django Segovia won gold in the men’s pole vault and the SPC women’s 4x800 relay team secured the first national title for the Lady Texans on day one of the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at the Ross Black Field of Champions on the campus of New Mexico Junior College.
Segovia cleared the bar at 15' 9.75' to notch 10 points for South Plains who sits in third in the team standings with two days remaining. Nelvin Appiah-Konadu is first after five events in the decathlon, totaling 3933 points on day one. South Plains’ Harry Crosby is fourth in the decathlon, totaling 3511 points on Thursday.
The Lady Texans totaled 10 points in the 4x800, as Rushana Dwyer, Leticia Quingostas, Jeniel Jones, and Lilliana Guerrero turned in a 9:19.93 to take the top spot. In the heptathlon, Amber Simpson is eighth following day one, totaling 2623 points.
Due to inclement weather Thursday evening, the men’s 4x800, men’s and women’s 4x100, men’s and women’s 400 hurdles, men’s and women’s 400-meter dash, and the men’s and women’s 10k will be rescheduled over the final two days of the meet.
