South Plains College is offering swim lessons, parent and child classes, community exercise classes and swimming memberships throughout the summer.
Beginner swim classes are available for children six years and older. Students will be taught how to swim on their front and back and how to float.
Beginner swim class schedule: - June 12 - June 22: 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
- June 12 - June 22: 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
- July 10 – July 20: 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.
- July 10 – July 20: 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
- July 24 – Aug. 3: 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
Advanced beginner classes are available for students that have passed beginner swimming. Students will learn elementary back, back crawl stroke, diving and improve their crawl stroke skills.
- June 12 – June 22: 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.
- July 10 – July 20: 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
-July 24 – Aug. 3: 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
Intermediate swim classes are available to students that have passed advanced beginner swim classes. Students will learn breaststroke and sidestroke. This course prepares students to become a future lifeguard. This class is held Tuesday and Thursday.
- July 24 – Aug. 3: 9:00 to 9:50 a.m. Adult beginner classes are available for anyone 14 years or older who want to learn to swim. -July 11 – July 27: 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Parent and child classes are for children six months to six years old. Adults must accompany each child in the water. The class has an emphasis on water adjustment and parent and child interaction. - June 12 – June 28: 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday - June 13 – June 29: 6:45 to 7:15 Tuesday and Thursday - July 10 – July 26: 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday - July 11 – July 27: 6:45 to 7:15 Tuesday and Thursday.
Community excersice classes are also available at the South Plains College Natatorium.
Early bird swim is an noninstructional lap swimming only class.
- June 5 – Aug. 9: 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday Deep and Shallow Water Aerobic classes are a combination of stretching and aerobic activity in the water. This is an individualized workout that is non-instructional. - June 5 – Aug. 9: 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday Arthritis exercise classes are low impacts exercises for those with arthritis. A stretching, flexibility and muscle strengthening workout. Those interested do not have to have arthritis to attend.
- June 5 – Aug. 9: 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday Water aerobics is a water exercise program designed to improve flexibility and strength and increase aerobic capacity.
- June 6 – Aug. 10: 5:30 to 6:30 Tuesday and Thursday Open swim for members is Monday through Thursday 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Lap swim only is Monday through Thursday noon to 1:00 p.m. and Monday and Wednesday 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Springboard class will teach the basics of diving and the proper bounce for front and back dives. Front dives, back dives, inward dives, reverse dives, ½ twist dives and back dives will be taught. Flips will be taught depending on ability.
