Morton ISD held their annual football camp July 24-26, for the incoming fourth through ninth graders. The Morton coaching staff taught all aspects of football on offense, defense and special teams. The coaching staff prioritized making the camp enjoyable for the kids that attended. Additionally, the staff ensured all drills taught to the campers would benefit those individuals in understanding the fundamentals of the game.
The camp had around 10 kids in attendance the first day of camp but had high hopes of more attending because of word of mouth.
Head Coach Keith Mauldin, who is also serving as the new Morton Athletic Director, was very excited for the camp to be going on and couldn’t wait to show all the kids that attended how to play football and how fun the game can be when they start early.
The entire coaching staff was on hand to show their support and to help out with the drills to show the kids how everything was done. Covering a little bit of everything such as throwing the ball, running routes to showing players proper catching technique, the overall environment gave off an exciting feeling.
The camp continue through Wednesday and showed signs of more kids and players participating. The Morton staff has continued to gain positive feedback from the kids wanting to participate in the program and from the returning kids who have been involved in the past.
Coach Mauldin explained that the purpose of summer camps is to help the community kids learn more knowledge about the game and how it is played. Additionally, it allows kids to stay involved with the schools athletic program until they enter school sports.
Assistant Coach Jared Thomas was the main instructor along side Coach Mauldin directing the kids and trying to get the kids to stay active and have fun.
While getting instruction and the most reps possible over the span of the camp, the staff have prioritized keeping the kids in good health as Texas has been experiencing extreme heat. Constant water breaks and staying hydrated has been implemented as a teaching moment by the staff in order to stay healthy and in the best physical form.
In turn, the staff also shared the sentiment that workouts and future games could be played in the heat and that requires a lot of heart and perseverance.
As the camp progressed, Coach Mauldin felt the kids worked hard despite the hot conditions and believes the kids enjoyed putting in hard work while enjoying their time playing a sport they love.
