Another school year approaches for students attending Levelland ISD and big changes have been made with the recent closure of the Levelland Intermediate School.
With Levelland ISD previously announcing the closure of the school last spring, the district has fielded many questions regarding the future plans of the relocated students.
It was announced that students in grade levels Pre-K through first grade would be attending Levelland Academic Beginning’s Center, South and Capital Elementary’s would be housing second through fourth graders and the Levelland Middle School will house fifth through eighth grades. The Levelland High School grades will remain unchanged.
With the closing of LIS, many question have been asked by parents about the traffic situation surrounding LABC and LMS.
With limited road access for both buildings as they reside on E. Ellis Street, the main point of access for vehicles is N. Alamo Road.
In years past, traffic has presented issues during pickup times and drop-off times. The addition of an additional grade level for both school’s has raised concern from parents.
To address this concern, LMS Principal, Eric Eugenis, recently released a video on screencastify to walk parents through the process, and relieve any anxiety revolving around it.
School hours this year for LMS will start at 8 a.m. for all grades, however teachers and staff will be on campus by 7:15 a.m., when the doors open.
The release times have been staggered slightly by grade level to help relieve any congestion that may occur. Grades fifth through sixth will be released at 3:45 p.m., while seventh through eighth grade will be released 15 minutes later at 4 p.m.
Eugenis asked parents not to park along E. Ellis Street as it is unsafe for children because of the lack of crosswalks and staff supervision. Additionally, he asked parents not to park in nearby grassy areas, as many of them contain sprinklers that can be damaged.
It was common in years past for some students to walk down to the nearby carwash in order to be picked up, however LISD is now cautioning against that as well, seeing as it is private property, unsupervised by school staff, and could be considered trespassing.
Throughout the video, Eugenis asked for patience for new parents and new logistics, and reminded everyone that the first few days would be hectic.
Should anyone have any questions or concerns about the process, the number to call is 806-894-6355.
With the school year closely approaching, Levelland ISD has also informed parents of its policy regarding free and reduced-price meals for children under the current income eligibility guidelines.
Parents with children attending the district should start receiving letters about eligibility benefits beginning August 1.
