The Texas Department of Transportation is set to begin work on a project that will enhance the landscape at the southeast corner of US 385 and FM 300 in Levelland. The $120,496 project is partially funded through the Keep Texas Beautiful or KLB Governor’s Community Achievement Award.
Construction is scheduled to start next week, with contractor Encino Landscaping, Inc. of Cleveland, TX, setting construction signs along the project limits, said Neil Welch, P.E., TxDOT Littlefield Area engineer.
“No work will take place on either the US 385 or FM 303 main lanes and no lane closures are planned, so we do not anticipate any impacts to traffic.” Welch said. “However, we do ask drivers to stay alert when entering the work zone and watch out for construction equipment entering and leaving the project area.”
Project work includes the construction of a wall and placement of a tile mosaics created by local artist Pauline Mills. The design will highlight the area’s rich history and local points of interest.
According to the KTB website, For more than 30 years, Keep Texas Beautiful, in partnership with the TxDOT, has awarded the prestigious Governor’s Community Achievement Awards to Texas communities for their outstanding overall efforts to keep their communities beautiful.
The GCAA program has recognized outstanding communities since 1969, with TxDOT providing landscaping award funding since 1985.
The amount is based on population size. The funds are used for landscaping projects along state rights-of-way. The city of Levelland was honored with the award in 2020. The project is anticipated to be completed in early 2024.
