Hockley County grand jury returns indictments

Following Hockley County grand jury that was held August 25, the jury returned 15 indictments that were filed within the 286th District Court.

Billy Carol Sherrod, 55, was charged with Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animal – Kill, Poison, SBI. According to the indictment, Sherrod killed a gold or yellowhaired male dog by tethering the animal to the defendants’ vehicle and proceeded to drag the dog to its death. The document states the defendant’s actions were not justified by generally accepted lawful activities such as fishing, hunting, trapping, wildlife management, depredation control, shooting preserve practices as regulated by state and federal laws or animal husbandry and agricultural practices involving livestock animals.

A second count states Sherrod tortured a black and white-haired female dog by tethering the animal to the defendants’ vehicle and dragging the dog with the vehicle. The document states the defendant’s actions were not justified by generally accepted lawful activities such as fishing, hunting, trapping, wildlife management, depredation control, shooting preserve practices as regulated by state and federal laws or animal husbandry and agricultural practices involving livestock animals.

D’Lanee Jordan Alexander, 25, was charged with having a Prohibited Substance, Item in Correctional, Civil Commitment Facility and Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One/1-B, less than one gram.

According to the indictment, on or about May 28, Alexander knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine while in the Hockley County Jail. A second count states the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine, in an amount less than one gram.

Tomas Olivas Vargas, 27, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One/1-B, less than one gram. According to the indictment, on or about May 26, Vargas knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely fentanyl, in an amount less than one gram. A second count within the indictment states the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely heroin, in an amount less than one gram.

Rikardo Nikolas Chavez, 18, was charged with Robbery. According to the indictment, on or about May 2, while in the course of committing theft of property, the defendant intentionally caused bodily injury to a female individual by hitting her torso. Additionally, in the course of committing theft of property, the defendant placed the female individual in fear of imminent bodily injury.

Shane Tyrell Whitfield, 40, was charged with the Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One/1-B, between one and four grams. According to the indictment, on or about February 5, the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine, in an amount of one gram or more but less than four grams.

Thomas Ray Lopez, 30, was charged with the Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One/1-B, between one and four grams. According to the indictment, on or about May 23, the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely cocaine, in an amount of one gram or more but less than four. Additionally, the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely cocaine, while in the Hockley County Jail.

Raygan Dale Andrews, 36, was charged with the Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Theft of a Firearm. According to the indictment, on or about September 6, 2022, the defendant intentionally operated a motorvehicle without the effective consent of the owner, Joey West. A second count within the indictment states the defendant unlawfully appropriated a firearm from the owner, Joey West, with the intent to deprive the owner of the property.

Paul Moses Saiz, 31, was charged the Fraudulent Use, Possession of a Debit, Credit Cards, between 10 and 50 items and the Fraudulent Use, Possession of Identifying Information, less than five items.

According to the indictment, with the intent to harm and defraud another, the defendant possessed the number and expiration date of credit cards: Home Depot Credit Card ending in 1330, Walmart Mastercard ending 6781, Amazon Prime Silver Card ending in 2939, Sam’s Club Plus Card ending in 8189, Capital One Credit Card ending in 5120, Merrick Bank Visa ending in 1543, Black Visa Card ending in 8869, Black CashApp Card ending in 9088, Walmart Capital One Credit Card ending in 6895, Capital One Platinum Credit Card ending in 1435, Discover Card ending in 1936, Credit One Visa Black Card ending in 1595, Credit One Silver Card ending in 1603, Citi Rewards Card ending in 2532, Avant Mastercard ending in 7588 and Capital One Dark Blue Credit Card ending in 9396, without the effective consent of Katherine A. Simmons, the account holder and the number of items possessed 10 or more but less than 50.

A second count in the indictment states the defendant, with the intent to hard or defraud without the effective consent of Katherine A. Simmons possessed less than five items of identifying information, namely the complainants Texas driver’s license or identification card.

Hector Chavez, 49, was charged with the Assault of a Peace Officer, Judge. According to the indictment, on or about June 9, the defendant intentionally caused bodily injury to an officer by grabbing the individual’s neck as the defendant knew the individual was a police officer during the officer’s attempt to detain or arrest the defendant.

Janessa Deann Perez, 30, was charged with Manufacturing, Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One/1-B, between one and four grams. According to the indictment, on or about May 26, the defendant knowingly possessed with the intent to deliver substances listed in penalty group one in an amount more than one gram but less than four grams. The indictment states the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely fentanyl and heroin, with a total aggregate amount of one gram or more but less than four grams.

An additional indictment was filed regarding Perez as the individual was charged with having a Prohibited Substance, Item in a Correctional, Civil Commitment Facility and Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One, between one and four grams.

According to the second indictment, on or about May 28, the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine, in the Hockley County Jail. A second count states the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine, in an amount of one gram or more but less than four grams.

Michael Shawn Roberts, 39, was charged with Engaging in Criminal Activity. According to the indictment, on or about July 5, 2022, with the intent to establish, maintain, participate or a combination consisting of Misty Searsy and Chet Crawford who collaborated to commit the criminal offense of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, with the defendant committing the offense of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

Additionally, the indictment states that through the combination of the defendant, Searsy and Crawford, collaborated to commit the criminal offense of Burglary of a Building as the defendant knowingly committed the burglary of a building.

Misty Dawn Searsy, 47, was charged with Engaging in Criminal Activity. According to the indictment, on or about July 5, 2022, with the intent to establish, maintain, participate or a combination consisting of Michael Roberts and Chet Crawford who collaborated to commit the criminal offense of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, with the defendant committing the offense of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

Additionally, the indictment states that through the combination of the defendant, Roberts and Crawford, collaborated to commit the criminal offense of Burglary of a Building as the defendant knowingly committed the burglary of a building.

Jeremiah Vela-Ramon, 23, was charged with the Burglary of a Building. According to the indictment, on or about May 14, the defendant intentionally entered a building or a portion of a building without the effective consent of Guadalupe Cavarrubias, the owner, and attempted to commit theft of property.

Marcos Gustavo Baeza, 21, was charged with Injuring Child, Elderly, Disabled with Intent – SBI/Mental. According to the indictment, on or about May 3, the defendant intentionally caused bodily injury to a child 14year-of-age or younger by striking the child in the face with the defendants’ hand or fist. It was also stated that the defendant used his hands’ as a deadly weapon during the commission of the charged offense.
