The day of November 11 is one day that many of us will not forget as it will be one of the most heart-breaking events to happen on American soil.
Now in 2023, the events that transpired that day still resonate with so many Americans.
I was in elementary when everything happened and I vividly remember my teachers crying and a lot of us students trying to figure out what was happening. Listening to the radio at full volume in the classroom, a lot of us were trying to piece together what had happened and why were we listening to the radio about something that happened far away on the other side of the country.
I don’t think it sunk into our minds the enormity of what had happened. As elementary children and even a little older, I think it was a difficult subject for our minds to grasp because it was probably a difficult subject to explain to children without bringing in the entirety of the aftermath that had taken place.
By the time we were in middle school, I think that was the turning point when a lot of us younger kids understood the severity of 9/11. That was the time where we were shown documentaries, heard the stories and I began to finally piece together why my teachers and everyone around us at the time of the event were heart broken.
As you gradually understood what had happened, you heard about the passengers leaving voicemails to their loved ones, passengers fighting the terrorists and the other flights that were involved besides the two planes that flew into the two towers.
It is hard to listen about the hundreds if not thousands of individuals who attempted to save lives wether it be fire fighters, EMT’s, and peace officers. Civilians going about their day as if it was ordinary were shocked and heart broken in New York and across the country.
It certainly brought together an entire country, but at the immeasurable cost, it is still a lot to take in.
