The historic Wallace Theatre in Downtown Levelland is proud to announce a significant milestone in its ongoing restoration and preservation project.
On Wednesday, September 27th, the installation of a cuttingedge AAON 20-ton HVAC unit represents a major leap forward in enhancing the comfort and experience for all patrons who will visit this cherished cultural landmark.
This accomplishment is made possible because of the generous support of individual donors, community partners, including Smith Auto Family and Sundown State Bank, and area foundations including The CH Foundation, The Hockley County Endowment, The Rea Charitable Trust, and The Wayne and JoAnn Moore Charitable Trust.
The Wallace Theatre, which has been a cornerstone of Downtown Levelland beginning in 1928, has faced the challenge of providing modern amenities since it closed in the late 1980’s and fell into disrepair over the next 20plus years. This HVAC installation is not only a testament to the dedication of its supporters but also a reflection of the community’s commitment to maintaining the vibrancy of this cherished institution.
The installation of the AAON 20-ton HVAC unit was a complex engineering feat that required meticulous planning and execution. The sheer size and weight of the unit meant that a Trumble Crane had to be brought in, necessitating the temporary closure of Ave. H. The crane was used to lift the HVAC unit over the two-story theatre building and onto the roof of the adjacent structure. Substantial steel infrastructure was also put in place to ensure the secure placement of the unit. The architectural design for this project was done by MWM Architects in Lubbock with Chambers Engineering, LLC developing the Mechanical and Electrical designs. Henthorn Commercial Construction is managing the project and White Service Company installed the unit and duct work.
The successful installation of this HVAC unit is not merely a technical achievement; it signifies the culmination of years of dedication from the community, donors, and supporters and the Wallace Theater Board and Staff. The Wallace Theatre has been a hub of cultural activity, hosting a diverse range of events, from concerts and live theatre to comedy shows, movie screenings, magic shows, and educational programs such as STEAM Camp, WonderPark, Gen-Z Youth Development, and Theatre Camps. Each event has engaged our community, igniting their love for this historic building and their commitment to preserving it for future generations.
“Every event and program hosted at the Wallace Theatre has played a pivotal role in our restoration journey,” said Alycyn Keeling, Executive Director at the Wallace Theatre. “It is heartwarming to witness the support and passion that the community has poured into this project. The installation of the HVAC unit is a significant stride towards ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the diverse array of educational opportunities and cultural activities that have made the Wallace Theatre a cherished part of our city.”
The Wallace was built in 1928 as a movie theatre. With its rich history and commitment to preserving the arts, the theatre continues to be a beloved landmark that brings the community together.
