According to Levelland Police Captain Mateo Lopez, multiple law enforcement agencies engaged in a police pursuit that lasted roughly 55 minutes.
On November 28, around 11:35 p.m. an LPD officer initiated a traffic stop after observing a traffic violation in the area of Avenue S and Austin Street.
The pursuit took place in the southwest portion of the Levelland City Limits and Hockley County with the LPD, Hockley County Sheriff’s Office, Sundown Police Department, Cochran County Sheriff’s Office and a Department of Public Safety helicopter engaging in the pursuit.
Lopez explained that LPD Sergeant Ty Land was able to deploy tire deflation devices which ended the pursuit safely and peacefully on FM 300 and Kelly Road. As a result, two individuals were placed under arrest with the driver of the vehicle being the main suspect.
Lopez added that the driver of the vehicle became the primary suspect with Evading Arrest or Detention with a Motor Vehicle. During the pursuit,__ speeds of 120 mph were reached, but Lopez reported there were no injuries throughout the event.
“Successfully pursuing the vehicle and coming to a peaceful resolution needs to be contributed to all law enforcement personnel who engaged in the incident,” said Lopez.
Lopez also shared that he was proud of Sargeant Land’s use of the “STOP STICKS” or tire deflation devices that are one of the resources law enforcement agencies can utilize in the event of a high speed pursuit.
STOP STICK offers some of the fastest deployment of any tire deflation device. The company has partnered with more than 12,000 agencies in the U.S. and around the world. The equipment is also a part of more than 500,000 units and have helped successfully end hundreds of thousands of pursuits with more than 40,000 documented successes.
