Cochran County will be hosting a centennial celebration at the Cochran County Courthouse Square in Morton, Saturday, May 11.
The Cochran County Courthouse is located at 100 N. Main Street in Morton. The celebration will begin with a parade which will begin at 10 a.m.
All persons, clubs, organizations, business and any other interested parties are invited to join the parade, be it on foot, bicycle, horseback, vehicle or float. Parade participants will line up at 9:30 a.m. on the West Grant Ave side of Strickland Park.
Spectators are encouraged to line both sides of Main Street (State Highway 214) in Morton. The parade will begin at 10 a.m., turning on to Main Street from West Grant Avenue and will end at the Cochran County Courthouse. At the conclusion of the parade, the TeamCrista Foundation Poker Run will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additionally, winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m.
Entry fee’s are set at $20 per person and the run is not limited to motorcycles only. All vehicles are welcome to enter. Registration and last chip draw will be at the Cochran County Courthouse. Individuals will need to look for the TeamCrista canopy. The highest score wins half the entry fees while the remaining monies will benefit the TeamCrista Foundation. Ties will be decided by highest chip draw.

Running along side the poker run, a Show and Shine event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, a Centennial Volleyball Tournament will be held. All matches will be held at the Cochran County Park in Morton. First place will win a trophy, $100, and bragging rights for the next 100 years.
Teams will be coed and all teams must be present five minutes before game time or the game will be forfeited. All players must have all waivers signed, mulligans purchased and entry fee paid for prior to game day. Players must be between the ages of 10-years-old and 100-years-old to play. All players will have read and will abide by tournament rules. Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer for their favorite teams.
Tournament rules are as follows: - Games will be refereed by rotation volunteer officials. All calls by the officials are final. No arguing. It’s for charity.
- Teams are limited to 10 players, age ranges between 10--years-of-age and 100-years-ofage. Coaches may be added on team as long as they do not play. There must be a minimum of four girls on each team with two girls on the sand at all playing times.
- Team names, roster, and waivers were due by April 29.
- Once a roster has been submitted, those players are no longer eligible to play for another team. A pickup player can be used once if team is short a player, but must already be on a team roster within the league.
- There is a $10 late fee for sign-ups.
- Games are played to 21 points or 30 minutes with 15minute intervals. Whoever is winning when time is done by rally scoring; win by two, with a 23point cap. Rally scoring means there is a point for every serve. Teams will switch sides when the first team reaches 11 points.
- A mulligan ticket is limited to six per team for the entire tournament. They must be purchases right before each game by the referee on cite. Mulligans can be used for offensive of defensive plays, but must be submitted immediately after play to referee. Mulligans can also reverse a play.
- Winners will be determined by team record throughout the head-to-head competition.
- Players will rotate in at the right, back position (server) on each rotation. A rotation must occur after each side-out and in the same order throughout the game. Players must remain in their rotated spot during each play. Failure to do so, will give the other team an automatic point.
- A “let” serve that clears the net is considered playable. The receiving team may not block or spike a serve. The server’s feet may not touch the court lines until after contact has been made with the volleyball.
- Players are not permitted to touch the net. Incidental contact of the net by a player’s hair or insignificant contact with the net by a player not involved in the action is not considered a fault. A player may touch the posts, ropes or other objects outside the total length of the net, provided this does not interfere with play. If a player touches the net, the opposing team gets the point and the serve. This shall be determined at the sole discretion of the official.
- Players may use any part of their body to volley so long as such contact with the ball does not constitute a “carry” or a “lift”. A “block” is not considered a team hit and after “block” contact, a team is entitled to three hits to return the ball. The player who made the block may also make the first contact in the same series.
- Court lines are considered “IN”.
- If the ball touches the antennas or any part of the net outside the playing court, the play is immediately ruled dead and the point will go to the receiving team.
- No shoes, no shirt, no volley.
- Snacks and beverages will be sold at the tournament location.
- All players must sign the waiver form before stepping on the court. Failure to do so will result in an automatic forfeit for any team not abiding by this rule.

Capping off the evening will be live music from the SPC County Jukebox from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The group Day Late Dollar Short will perform from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Conjunto Bam will perform from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Texland will end the night performing from 9:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Cochran County is seeking photos, stories, and/or histories of people, families, classes, places, buildings, events, and anything else in Cochran County from 1900-2024. These photos will all be included in a slide show which will play throughout the day of May 11 on the Cochran County Courthouse and later added to the county history website.
