Hockley Grand Jury returns indictments

The 286th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced that a Hockley County Grand Jury convened on May 23, and considered cases against 14 individuals.

After presentations by the District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement, the Grand Jury returned 12 indictments.

Mark Anthony Avila, 27, was charged with criminal mischief between $2,500 and $30,000. Avila’s bond was issued at $5,000.

On or about April 17, Avila intentionally damaged or destroyed tangible property, namely a glass window in the McDonald’s Restaurant in Levelland by throwing a rock that broke through the wind. The pecuniary loss is $2,500 or more but less than $30,000.

In the same course of events, on or about April 17, Avila intentionally damaged or destroyed tangible property, namely a glass window in the City Bank building in Levelland by throwing a rock through the window. The pecuniary loss is $100 or more but less than $750.

Samuel Martinez, 40, was charged with injuring a child, elderly individual or disabled individual causing serious bodily injury or serious mental deficiency, impairment or injury. Bond was issued in the amount of $20,000.

On or about April 3, Martinez intentionally caused bodily injury or serious bodily injury to an individual 65-year-of-age or older by grabbing the arm and throwing the individual to the floor.

Chrisanta Ann Castro, 38, was charged with hindering the apprehension or prosecution of a known felon. Bond was issued in the amount of $7,500.

On or about January 30, the defendant had the intent to hinder the arrest, prosecution, conviction or punishment of Joshua Burnett for the offense of indecency with a child by harboring or concealing Burnett as the defendant knew that Burnett was charged with a felony.

Patricia Ann Zapata, 64, was charged with hindering the apprehension or prosecution of a known felon. Bond was issued in the amount of $7,500. the defendant had the intent to hinder the arrest, prosecution, conviction or punishment of Joshua Burnett for the offense of indecency with a child by harboring or concealing Burnett as the defendant knew that Burnett was charged with a felony.

Tammie Campbell, 55, was charged with having a prohibited substance or item in a correctional facility, civil commitment facility and possession of a controlled substance penalty group one 1-B, less than one gram. Bond was issued in the amount of $6,000.

On or about February 7, Campbell knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine while in the Hockley County Jail, a correctional facility. Additionally, a second count states the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine in an amount less than one gram.

Jonathan Edward Mata, 32, was charged with tampering or fabricating physical evidence with the intent to impair and unlawful possession of a firearm by felon. Bond was issued in the amount of $10,000.

On or about March 10, the defendant understood an investigation was pending or in progress, namely law enforcement pursuing Mata while he was operating his vehicle on a public street. Mata attempted to conceal the firearm by tossing it out of the window of his moving car with the intent to impair its availability as evidence in the investigation or official proceeding.

A second count states Mata, having been convicted of the felony offense of theft of a firearm on February 10, 2021, knowingly possessed a firearm before his fifth anniversary of the defendant’s release from confinement following conviction of the felony.

Juan Hernandez Ramirez, 67, was charged with the possession of a controlled substance penalty group one 1-B, between one gram and four grams and evading arrest with a vehicle. Bond was issued in the amount of $3,500.

On or about December 26, 2023, the defendant knowingly possessed a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine in an amount of more than one gram but less than four grams.

A second count state the defendant intentionally fled from a piece officer while using a vehicle on the same date.

Preston Scott Washington, 35, was charged with stalking with a previous conviction. Bond was issued in the amount of $50,000.

On one or more occasion as part of the same scheme or course of conduct, the defendant knowingly engaged in the following conduct directed toward a specific individual. On or about or about March 21, the defendant sent an electronic message threatening the individual which he knew or believed threatened the individual with bodily injury or death.

Additionally, on the same date, the defendant sent an electronic message to the individuals son which he knew or believed threatened the individual with bodily injury or death. The defendant also sent an sent an electronic message to the individual threatening the individuals sister which he knew or believed threatened the individual with bodily injury or death. The defendant also sent an sent an electronic message to the individuals sister which he knew or believed threatened the individual with bodily injury or death.

On or about March 22, the defendant also sent an sent an electronic message to the individual which he knew or believed threatened the individual with bodily injury or death.

It was further presented in the indictment that the defendant was convicted of stalking in the 106th District Court of Dawson County on January 17.

Samuel Soriano, 34, was charged with injuring a child, elderly individual or disabled individual causing serious bodily injury. Bond was issued in the amount of $7,500.

On or about April 14, Soriano intentionally caused bodily injury to a child 14-years-of-age or younger by pushing the child into a dresser.

Raul Mendoza Jr., 37, was charged with the assault of a family or house member by impeding breath or circulation. Bond was issued in the amount of $7,500.

On or about February 10, the defendant intentionally caused bodily injury to an individual the defendant has or had a dating relationship with by impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood by the complainant by applying pressure to the throat or the neck of the complainant.

Raul Mendoza Jr., 37, was charged with the burglary of a building.

On or about April 23, the defendant knowingly entered a building or a portion of a building with the effective consent of the owner and attempted to commit or committed theft of property.

Raul Mendoza Jr., 37, was charged with continuous violence against the family. Bond was issued in the amount of $25,000.

On or about April 23, the defendant intentionally caused the bodily injury of an individual the defendant has or had a relationship with by striking the individuals face with a fist and, or pulling the individuals hair out of their head.
