Local sales tax allocations for July

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar recently announced that he would be sending cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocations for July, 0.2% less than in July 2023.

Cities received $695.5 million in allocations, a 0.3% drop off from July 2023 and a 1.9% increase in the year-to-date change.

Transit Systems received $234.3 million in allocations, a 0.9% drop off from July 2023 and a 1.5% increase in the year-to-date change.

Counties received $67.8 million in allocations, 1% drop off from July 2023 and a 1.5% increase in the year-to-date change.

Special Purpose Districts received $108.4 million in allocations, a 2.9% increase from July 2023 and a 4.9% increase in the year-to-date change.

The July sales tax payment received for Levelland totaled $377,706.01, a decrease of 13% over the $434,170.49 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled roughly $2.78 million which is a 5.18% decrease from the prior year-todate total of $2.94 million The July sales tax payment received for Sundown totaled $36,247.22, a decrease of 43.84% over the $64,549.69 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $253,158.59 which is a 22.52% decrease from the prior year-to-date total of $326,767.59.

The July sales tax payment received for Smyer totaled $6,380.34, an 24.59% increase over the $5,121 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $42,902.47 which is a 18.01% increase of the prior year-to-date total of $36,352.95.

The July sales tax payment received for Ropesville totaled $10,677.18, an increase of 12.87% over the $9,459.03 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $79,995.57 which is a 1.89% decrease from the prior year-to-date total of $81,538.58.

The July sales tax payment received for Anton totaled $8,402.48, a 8.50% increase of the $7,744.05 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $65,123.33 which is a 2.64% increase from the prior year-to-date total of $63,444.11.

The July sales tax payment received for Opdyke West totaled $363.07, a 1.34% decrease over the $368.02 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $3,536.56 which is a 32.98% increase from the prior year-to-date total of $2,659.38.

The July sales tax payment received for Morton totaled $12,536.08 a 16.29% increase over the $10,779.16 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $89,108.31 which is a 1.12% decrease from the prior year-to-date total of $90,195.57.

The July sales tax payment received for Whiteface totaled $3,691.87, a 41.29% increase over the $2,612.91 received in July 2023.

The current year-to-date payment has totaled $21,931.79 which is a 9.77% increase from the prior year-to-date total of $19,978.52.

Hegar also announced the sales tax revenue total for the month of June reaching $3.9 billion.

“Monthly state sales tax collections were essentially flat compared to collections in June 2023, following the strong gains seen in May,” Hegar said. “The overall trends we have seen through the first three quarters of fiscal 2024 were evident again in June.

Sales tax remittances from the major sectors driven primarily by business spending were generally down, except for modest growth in receipts from the construction sector.

Receipts from consumer spending-driven sectors were up slightly overall compared with a year ago, with growth in receipts from both retail trade and the services sectors respectively. Within the retail trade sector, remittances from general merchandise stores led the way.

Total sales tax revenue for the three months ending in June 2024 was up 0.5% compared with the same period a year ago.

Sales tax is the largest source of state funding for the state budget, accounting for 57% of all tax collections.

Texas collected the following revenue from other major taxes: motor vehicle sales and rental taxes totaled $560 million, down 6% from June 2023; motor fuel taxes totaled $340 million, up 5% from June 2023; oil production tax totaled $493 million, up 8% from June 2023; natural gas production tax totaled $171 million, down 7% from June 2023; hotel occupancy tax totaled $71 million, up less than 1% from June 2023; and alcoholic beverage taxes totaled $160 million, up 2% from June 2023.
