South Plains Educational Cooperative has started accepting donations for a cross-county food truck as part of their transition program.
The fundraiser for the project was released on Aug. 30 and revealed by a document shared by Transition Coordinator Gloria Gamez, their goal was reached before its release.
SPECO Director Kelly Kent said early donations included $10,000 from Butch’s Rat Hole & Anchor Service in downtown Levelland, $8,000 from Jackson Hot Oil Service in Andrews, Texas and $3,000 from Myatt Farms.
Gamez’s note stated that new donations through the fundraiser will be used for a vehicle to move the food truck, as well as a generator, fire suppression system and cookware.
The transition program, Exceptional Transition Center, designs vocational training for students ages 14-22 with varying levels of disabilities, according to the document. SPECO partners with local organizations to provide training opportunities for the transition to post-high school life.
The food truck would allow students to apply culinary skills from a class setting in a real-world environment.
SPECO would take their food truck service to the communities the students represent, Gamez’s note stated. Proceeds from the food truck will go toward student scholarships, and remaining funds will be used for SPECO’s Unified Track & Field team.
