Blue & You will be hosting Texas Night Out on Tuesday, October 1 at Levelland’s Kauffman Park.
The event will be held from 68 p.m and will feature multiple activities for the community and local public safety agencies.
“Every year, we try to move it to a different park so that we get an opportunity to see different faces across the city of Levelland,” said Blue & You President Albert Garcia.
Invitations for the event were sent to every public safety agency in Hockley County, as well as state agencies, Garcia said.
Garcia said their participation gives kids the opportunity to get to know their public safety personnel, as well as allow community members to express concerns and ideas for their neighborhoods.
“They have been invited, and so if they send personnel, then great,” Garcia said. “We’re hoping that we’re gonna have a really good turnout.”
Yard game will be available to play during the event and walking tacos will be a food option for those in attendance, which are free and will be served as long as they last. Additionally, children will have the opportunity to take a look at public safety personnel equipment, as well as play games like kickball and basketball with members of those agencies.
“It’s just a fun night for everyone to get together and for us to really get a chance to have fellowship with our community members,” Garcia said.
Blue & You is a not-for-profit organization that was created in March 2020 when Garcia was police chief in Levelland, he said.
While in the department, he felt that it was important to create positive ties with the community. “Our community members actually started to do exactly what we wanted them to do, which was utilize us and us utilize them to solve crimes and to deter crimes,” Garcia said.
He said Blue & You was intended to be for the Levelland Police Department, but after a successful start, the organization’s board thought it should be a county-wide effort.
Funds generated from different programs like Texas Night Out go back into the community or are utilized for other organizations with similar missions, Garcia said.
The former chief said anyone interested in becoming involved with Blue & You can reach out to any board members or LPD. All they’re looking for are people that care about the community and want to make a positive impact.
“You’ll get to reap a lot of the rewards that we get to see since our inception,” Garcia said.
