Graveside services for Maria Piedra Leal, 89, of Morton, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 29, at the Morton Memorial Cemetery, with Deacon Robert Vidales officiating. The reciting of the Rosary was held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 28, at Ellis Funeral Home in Morton. She passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2022, in Lubbock.
Maria was born January 17, 1933, in Christine, Texas. She married Rudy Leal in Christine on January 3, 1954. Maria was a seamstress and loved to sew. She also enjoyed crocheting and gardening and was known for her famous tamales. Maria was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Gunsmoke.
She was passionate about her children and her grandchildren. Maria was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Morton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy; parents; a brother, Tomas Piedra, Sr.; a sister, Lupe Cardona; a son-inlaw, Donnie Sanchez; a granddaughter, Cristabel Rodriguez; and a grandson, Dominic Rodriguez. Maria is survived by her son, Rudy Leal, Jr. of Morton; four daughters: Emma Morin and husband, Jaime; and Janie Leal, both of Morton, Ruby Sanchez of Levelland and Christina Rodriguez and husband, Frank, of Morton; and six grandchildren: Brandy Morin Piña and husband, Robert; Jarrod Morin and wife, Rosa Casillas; Frankie Rodriguez Jr., Aryanna Piña, Robert Xavier Piña and Alexandria Piña.
