The Smyer Bobcats fall to the Floydada Whirlwinds 44-0, looking to build through early-season struggles as the Wildcats are still searching for its first win of the season.
At the half, the Bobcats fell behind 24-0, and the Whirlwinds continued to pull away.
Smyer struggled to establish consistency offensively, finishing with 84 total yards. The Bobcats rushed for 65 yards and completed 4 of 11 passes for 19 yards.
Floydada, meanwhile, finished with 366 total yards, including 190 rushing yards and 176 passing yards.
The Whirlwinds scored in each quarter, including starting the game fast with 16 points in the first quarter.
Smyer did have some bright spots defensively, as James Rampy led the Bobcats with 20 tackles, while Alex Mattox recorded 15 tackles.
This defensive output leaves Smyer’s head coach Scott Funke optimistic about his defense, as the activity on defense was able to make plays, holding the Whirlwinds to 1.47 yards per carry, outside of the two big run plays, combining for 137 yards.
“We played pretty well defensively, besides the big plays,” Funke said. “They averaged under two yards per carry if you take the big plays away.”
Despite their 0-3 result, coach Funke hasn’t changed the approach inside the Smyer’s locker room.
“It’s about the experience and trying to improve in order to get wins,” Funke said, keeping his mind on the process over the result.
The Bobcats will have another opportunity to show their improvement and get into the win, when they host Hale Center at 7:00 pm, on Sept. 17.
