Bobcats fall to Jackrabbits 45-30

The Smyer Bobcats played the Ralls Jackrabbits in district basketball play as the visiting team where they lost 45-30.

The first quarter started off with the Bobcats keeping up with the Jackrabbits as at the end of the first the score was Ralls leading 16-14.

The second quarter of play had Smyer tying the game up as they outscored Ralls 9-7 and making it all even at the half 23-23. For the Bobcats in the second they had eight of their nine points come from under the basket.

The leading scorer at the half for Smyer was Micah Zapata who had eight points, four of them from inside the paint.

Going into the third quarter of play Smyer struggled as they would only be able to get three points to fall for them while they allowed the Jackrabbits to get 11 to take the lead. The score at the end of the third had the Bobcats trailing 34-26.

For the final quarter of play Smyer wasn’t be able to find the switch as they were outscored once more 11-4 in the end to lose a very close district game.

Leading the Bobcats in scoring on the night was Zapata as he finished with 10 points on the night, eight of them coming from the first half.

Micah Stevens had six points, Ryann Gutierrez had five, Austin Martinez had four, Rylan Smith had three and Gio Garcia finished the game with two in the teams loss.

The Bobcats won the rebound battle as they outdid Ralls 37-to-34 throughout the night.

In the turnover battle is where Smyer struggled as they had 17 turnovers throughout the night while they forced 14 of their own.

The Bobcats shot the ball for 22% on the night while going for 18% from three. From the free throw line they shot for 31% making 5-of-16 as the night went on.

The Bobcats fall to 6-23 on the year while remaining winless in district with a 0-12 record.

The teams last game of the season is against the Olton Mustangs this Tuesday at home at 6:15 p.m.
