The Smyer Bobcats were no match for the visiting Plains Cowboys in a 62-41 home loss last Tuesday in UIL high school basketball action.
Smyer fell behind in the first quarter, trailing 14-8 at the buzzer.
The half-time score saw Plains up, 31-19.
The Bobcats were able to slow the bleeding a bit in the third quarter, but still fell further behind at 49-33.
Landon Polk had 13 points. Drew Overstreet and Shawn Barrett had seven each.
Brayden Wade had six. Ethan Morris had five and Micah Zapata had three. The Smyer Bobcats dehorned the Lockney Longhorns 54-46 in the UIL Region I, District 2A-4 boys’ high school basketball opener before Christmas break in Lockney.
Smyer led 16-2 at the end of the first quarter, and while Lockney did better in the remaining game, they were never able to make up that first quarter deficit.
The Bobcats led 31-22 at half-time and 45-36 at the end of three periods.
Landon Polk had 19 points to lead the Bobcats. Shawn Barret had 11. Drew Overstreet had 10. Jordan Bartlett had eight. Micah Zapata had four and Cameron Gutierrez had two.
The Bobcats will be in the Caprock Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ Weekend.
Whiteface
The Whiteface Antelopes downed the visiting Springlake-Earth Wolverines 74-61 in UIL high school basketball action on December 16.
Whiteface took a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 35-28 at half-time.
A big third quarter gave the Antelopes a 57-41 lead at the end of three.
Jeremiah Rendon had 19 points for the Antelopes. Jeremias Chavez and Brighton Scoggins had 13 each. Noah Rector had 10. Gavin Baker had seven. Ethan Kauffman had five. Josh Whitehead had three. Jeremiah Soliz and Beau Brewer had two each.
The Whiteface Antelopes opened UIL Region I, District 71A high school boys basketball play by dominating the visiting Cotton Center Elks 84-39.
Whiteface led 17-10 at the end of the first period, then extended the lead to 41-23 at halftime.
The third quarter score was, 62-33.
Jeremias Chavez had 23 points to lead all scorers. Brighton Scoggins had 14. Ethan Kauffman had 13. Noah Rector had nine. Jeremiah Rendon had eight. Auscar Gandara had seven. Gavin Baker had six. Josh Whitehead and Beau Brewer had two each.
The Antelopes will be in the Eula, N.M. tournament over the New Years’ weekend.
Ropes
The Ropes Eagles took a 6156 road loss to open UIL Region I, District 2A-5 high school boys’ basketball action.
Ropes trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and 29-27 at half-time.
Ropes went up 40-38 at the end of three quarters, but ran out of gas in the fourth.
Kade Franklin led the Eagles with 18 points. Landon Nale had 11. Brady Bryan had seven. Brennan Bearden had six. Nate Brooks had five. E.J. Mendez had four. Garrett Gilliam had three and Braxxin Partington had two.
The Eagles will Caprock Tournament in Lubbock over the New Years’ weekend.
