Still searching for their first win of the season, the Morton Indians fall 62-7 versus district foe Ropes Eagles.
Morton’s offense was not able to find itself until the end of the first quarter when senior quarterback Brayden Villareal ran for a fiveyard touchdown.
The Indians compiled 78 total offensive yards, passing for 65 yards and rushing for 13 yards, while Ropes totaled 321 yards with six yards passing and 315 yards on the ground. Morton’s game plan entering the game was to key in on stopping the run, but Morton’s Head Coach, Trevor Bulmer, was more optimistic about the passing defense.
“For as much man coverage as we played all night, we gave up six yards passing,” Bulmer said. “They took those deep shots; we just didn’t let them complete them.”
Even while trailing the whole game, the Indians made crucial plays throughout the game, showing the growth of the team.
“There’s been a couple of moments where I thought we just didn’t do a very good job of finishing games well. I thought we did a good job in this one finishing,” Bulmer said. “In the first half we got a fourth down stop in the red zone, and in the second half we got two more of them.”
Next on the schedule for Morton (0-7) (02) will be Smyer (0-7) (0-2), two teams who are looking for a win, but “the approach is the same,” Bulmer said about the mindset of the team despite if “the other team has a similar record.”
“You just play hard, you just show up,” Bulmer said. “If you earn a victory, there you go, you’ve earned it.”
The game between Morton and Smyer will kick off at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 in Smyer.
