The Ropes Lady Eagles downed the Fort Hancock Lady Mustangs 64-57 in the UIL Bi-District Girls’ Basketball Playoffs last Monday in Monahans.
Ropes led throughout but the Lady Mustangs would not go away, attempting a rally in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Eagles led 13-8 in the first quarter, 31-24 at half-time and 43-34 at the end of the third period.
Ropes hit nine treys, evenly divided between Aubrey Bandy, Allie Wilson and Tatum Melton. Melton had 20 points. Ava Grace Falls had 17. Bandy and Wilson had 11 each. Campbell Latta had three and Heather McNabb had two.
Eagles
Kade Franklin and Garrett Gilliam combined for 10 points in the overtime to give the Ropes Eagles a 55-50 win over the visiting Sundown Roughnecks in UIL district 5-2A boys’ high school basketball action last Tuesday.
Ropes led 7-5 at the end of the first period, 18-12 and 25-17 at half-time. In the third period, the Eagles led 35-28 and the score was tied at 45 at the end of regulation.
Franklin, Gilliam and Nate Brooks had 11 each to lead the Eagles. Darrin Kizer had eight. Reese Williams had four. Braxxin Partington and Brady Bryan had three points each. Tyler Gilliam and Brennan Bearden had two apiece. Watson Evans and Adan Escamilla led the Roughnecks with 10 points each. Noah Peralez had nine. Jaxon Rodriguez had six.
Alex Bocanegra had five points. Isaac Lopez and Jaryn Flores had three each. Jayson Martinez and Johnny Acevedo had two apiece.
Indians
The Morton Indians hit nine three point shots on their way to a 58-43 road win over the Anton Bulldogs in UIL district 7-1A boys’ high school basketball action last Friday.
Morton led 21-14 after one quarter, 37-24 at half-time and 5229 at the end of the third quarter.
Six Indian three pointers came from Alex Lopez, who had 25 points overall. Vicente Montoya had two treys on his way to 12 points.
Anibal Casteneda had 11 points. Juan Rincon had four. Xavier Ramon had a trey. Lane Lyon had a basket and A.J. Mendoza had a single free throw.
Gavin Martinez led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Joseph Whillock had nine. Gage Garcia and Jose Avalos had eight each. Zian Martinez had four points and Autillano Castillo had two.
The Morton Indians stunned the visiting Whiteface Antelopes 70-66 in UIL district 7-1A high school boys’ basketball action last Tuesday.
The Indians were playing for a chance at a play-in game with the Meadow Broncos for the fourth seed in the district while the Antelopes were expected to have a playoff with the Whitharral Panthers for first and second place.
With the Panthers’ win over Meadow, also on Tuesday, Whiteface is solidly in second place in the district while Morton and Meadow will played for a playoff position over weekend.
Morton wasted no time, taking a 19-10 lead in the first quarter and maintaining it through the second, leading 30-21 at halftime.
Whiteface came alive in the third quarter, outscoring the Indians 26-12 for a 47-42 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Indians outscored Whiteface 28-17 in the final period for the win.
Morton got big fourth quarters from Alex Lopez, who scored 11 of his 31 points in the final period and Lane Lyon, whose 13 points came on three treys and four free throws, all in the fourth quarter.
After Lopez and Lane Lyon, Anibal Casteneda had 10 points. A.J. Mendoza had six. Andres Bejarno, Vicente Montoya and Cade Lyon had three each. Jeremiah Rendon led Whiteface with 28 points. Brighton Scoggins had 23. Jeremias Chavez had 10. Ethan Kauffman had three and Jaime Flores had two.
Maidens
The Morton Maidens’ season ended with an 86-24 loss to the Sands Lady Stangs, ranked fourth in UIL class 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, in the bi-district round of the girls’ high school basketball playoffs in Tahoka last Monday.
The Lady Stangs hit 12 threepoint shots in the game.
Morton trailed 24-4 in the first quarter, 47-11 at half-time and 69-16 at the end of the third period.
Malory Alvarez had eight points in the effort. Chloe Enriquez had six. Kayleigh Boggs had five. Clarissa Holland had three and Destiny Viscarra had two.
Panthers
The Whitharral Panthers are district champions for the third year in a row after a 58-51 UIL district 7-1A boys’ high school basketball road win over the Meadow Broncos last Tuesday.
It took until the last game of the season and a little help from the Morton Indians for Whitharral to win the championship.
Whitharral and Whiteface were tied for first place, having only one loss each to each other.
Meadow was a game ahead of Morton in the race for fourth place.
With the Morton win over Whiteface and the Panthers’ win over Meadow, Whitharral ended up with sole possession of first place in the district, while Meadow was forced into a play-in game with Meadow for the last playoff spot.
Whitharral led 14-11 in the first quarter, 30-21 at half-time and 40-32 at the end of the third quarter.
Meadow’s Jimmy German caught fire in the fourth, scoring 12 of his game leading 17 points in a rally attempt.
Whitharral’s Kaden Smith stepped up, however, with 10 points in the fourth to mute the Bronco rally.
Brent Robinson led the Panthers with 16 points. Smith finished with 14. Jarrett Fryar had 10. Jeryn Ellerd had nine. Dawson Rodgers had five and Jack Griffin had four.
In addition to German, Wes Woodard had 12 points. Kaleb Sanchez had nine. Trevor Brockway had eight. Tate McBee had three and Taylor Caswell had two.
