The Levelland Lobos baseball team saw its first action of 2026 in a scrimmage at home against the Brownfield Cubs this past Saturday, losing 6-5.
But take the score with a grain of salt, when given the context. “It went well. We saw some young guys get really good reps,” Lobos Head Baseball Coach Chris Portwood said. “We had to clear the bases a couple times because innings were beginning to drag. Lots of work still needs to get done, but all in all, the boys did whatever it takes.”
In the shortened scrimmage, the Lobos recorded five hits, four walks and a run batted in. Third baseman RJ Mireles led the team with two hits including a double, and two runs scored in three at bats and shortstop Jake Potter had the team’s lone RBI.
Tobias Gavina recorded a double and a walk, while designated hitter Ian Rivera and center fielder Jeron Sali nas both recorded a hit in the scrimmage. Second baseman Abram Arteaga, right fielder Boston Winfield and catcher Kai Martinez all recorded a walk as well.
Following their opening scrimmage, the Lobos will host back-to-back scrimmages on Friday and Saturday. They host Seminole at 7 p.m. on Friday and Denver City at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
