The Levelland Lobos basketball team hosted and took down the Monahans Loboes this past Tuesday night, 6322.
The win marks Levelland’s fourth straight and improves them to 4-2 overall, while it drops Monahans to 0-4 this season.
It was a close game early on as Levelland only led 12-10 after the first quarter and then 25-12 at halftime before outscoring Monahans 22-2 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Levelland’s defense held Monahans to four second half points until the final few minutes in the fourth, where they scored garbage time points to dress up the score.
And as good as the defense was, junior power forward Graham Gibbs was just as good, as he singlehandedly outscored Monahans with 23 points in the game, behind five three-pointers.
Other scorers included sophomore shooting guard Noah Martin with 14 points, senior point guard Anthony Gonzalez and sophomore point guard Bryson Golightly both with eight points, freshman point guard Bentley Sepulbeda with seven points, and junior shooting guard Kane Rice and senior center Casen Potter both with two points.
As a team, Levelland shot 30% on 71 field goals and 5/17 from three-point range, while holding Monahans to 19% on 32 field goals and 1/11 from three-point range. They also forced 36 Monahans turnovers and outrebounded them 41 -29 in the game.
The suffocating Levelland defense was the key in the blowout win, and they’ll seek to keep that same level of intensity as they compete in the New Home tournament over the weekend.
The tournament opponent pool includes New Home, Whitharral, Slaton, Lubbock Christian, Frenship Memorial, Wink, Pampa and West Plains.
