LHS Tennis dominates opener

This past Saturday, the Levelland High School Tennis Pack opened their fall season with a 12-4 victory at home against Big Spring.

In the team’s lopsided win, the boys side led the way.

“The boys swept, they didn’t lose a single match,” LHS Tennis Head Coach Jeffrey Braziel said. “The closest match for them was 6-3.”

In not particularly close fashion, the likes of Nathan Ellis, William Cannon, Brady Houston, Reese Payton, Zachary Lopez, Diego Franco, Payton Ewings and Mark Muniz dominated the day with their undefeated efforts.

Coach Braziel noted that the boys weren’t the only dominant ones though as on the girl’s side Madison Almager, Daniela Perez-Garcia, Lilly Alvarado and Kimberley Campos all went undefeated on the day as well.

While he highlighted all the undefeated performances on Saturday, Braziel also expressed his pride in the team as a whole for starting off the season right against Big Spring.

“What stood out honestly man is that we went out there and we did exactly what we were expected to do,” Braziel said. “Whereas in the past it’s been one of those things that it’s a match we should win, and we will struggle for some weird reason. So, it’s just that determination of alright, we’ve got to go out here and take care of business.”

In the preseason, Braziel referenced intentionally targeting previous bad habits in practice and changing for the better this season.

That intentionality is already paying off with a fantastic opening victory, which means more for the team than you know.

“It’s huge to start off with a win because a lot of people don’t realize we start practicing in June. We don’t take a lot of time off because you just can’t stay competitive,” Braziel said. “So, when you start with that win it really kind of validates all the work you’ve been putting in, which is a huge momentum builder, and it helps with a lot of buy-in when it comes to the practice part.”

Following a great opening performance, the Levelland Tennis Pack will look to keep building on that momentum.

Additionally, the team announced Houston was selected as the Player of the Week. Similarly, Almager was selected as Player of the Week, They’ll get their chance to build on it this week as they play five matches, all on the road. On Thursday, they head to Lubbock to face Coronado at 10 a.m. and on Saturday they have a double header in Monahans against Monahans at 10 a.m. and Clint at 3 p.m.
