The Levelland Loboettes basketball team hosted the Big Spring Lady Steers for a district matchup this past Tuesday night, beating them 58-41.
The game ended as a blowout, but it was far from that to start, as the Loboettes only led 25-23 at halftime, which Loboettes Head Basketball Coach Jacob Bell accredited to the low energy and focus of his team.
Coach Bell and his staff gave the message to the Loboettes at halftime to not just play, but to compete and bring energy and effort in the second half, which they would respond to by outscoring the Lady Steers 3318 in the second half to earn the win.
Scorers for the Loboettes included Brook’lyn Cornish with 15 points, Brooklyn Escobar and Presley Smith both with 10 points, London Branch and Zanity Sanchez both with seven points, and Trinity Wafer, Jill Lopez and Whitney Williams all with three points.
As a team, the Loboettes shot 28% from the field and 11% from three, compared to Big Spring’s 30% from the field and 10% from three, and the Loboettes would outshoot them from the free throw line 68% to 67%.
Big Spring outrebounded the Loboettes, 47-25, but the difference in the game would be the Loboettes stellar defense, which forced 35 Big Spring turnovers.
The win improves the Loboettes to 20-6 overall and 3-2 in district play, which ties them for third in the 4A District 5 standings.
They’re tied with Estacado, who they face over the weekend on the road, before heading to play another road district matchup on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. against San Angelo Lakeview.
