The Levelland Loboettes basketball team hosted and blew out the Lorenzo Lady Hornets this past Tuesday night, 70-27.
The win improves the Loboettes to 5-3 this season and marks their third win in the last four games, while it drops Lorenzo to 2-4 overall.
The Loboettes started slow in the game, only leading 15-14 after the first quarter, before going on to outscore Lorenzo 55-13 in the final three quarters to win the game.
“Overall, I thought this was our best team performance in the sense that every girl got in the game and played meaningful minutes,” Loboettes Basketball Head Coach Jacob Bell said. “We kind of got off to a sluggish start in the first quarter, but after that I thought we played with great pace and tempo.”
Coach Bell also noted that November is a learning curve for his girls, as several of them have never played with each other or even played on varsity.
It’s safe to say they’re picking it up quick as they shot 40% on 70 field goals and 7/21 from three-point range, which was levels above Lorenzo’s 18% on 38 field goals and 2/17 from three-point range.
Levelland’s scorers included Brook’lyn Cornish with 22 points, Carleigh Delgado and Presley Smith both with eight points, Whitney Williams and Trinity Wafer both with seven points, Jill Lopez and London Branch both with five points, Sydnii Joyce with four points, and Brooklyn Escobar and Destynii Jones both with two points.
The Loboettes were firing on all cylinders as all but one of their players scored on the night, but Coach Bell still sees things they need to work on.
“We had too many unforced turnovers tonight, playing too fast and not seeing the court. Then just being undisciplined,” Coach Bell said. “We sent them to the free throw line way too many times in the first half, which can bail teams out and give them confidence.”
They’ll take the coaching and look to apply it instantly for the Denver City tournament over the weekend.
The tournament opponent pool includes Denver City, Andrews, Seagraves, Portales, Ropes, Littlefield, Estacado, Sundown, Fort Stockton, Monahans, Midland Classical, Plains and Presidio.
“Hopefully we can get some momentum in our tournament this weekend, then we have another Tuesday night game and tournament next week,” Coach Bell said. “We could possibly play 10-12 games in the next two weeks. I told them in the locker room, ‘we want to take small building blocks. We don’t have to take 100 steps at once. We can keep building each and every day to be where we need to be at the end of the year.’”
