Local powerlifting teams represented at regional meets

Regional qualifiers of area boys’ powerlifting teams competed last week with the hopes of finishing top two in their respective weight classes for a chance at the state powerlifting meet.

The Levelland Powerlifting Team was represented at the THSPA (Texas High School Powerlifting Association) Boys Region 1 Division 2 meet at Abilene Wylie, March 6.

Levelland had five lifters compete.

Nathaniel Alvarado competed in the 123 lb. weight class; Zaden Carrillo and Arron Salas each competed in the 132lb. weight class; Alex Salinas competed in the 165 lb. weight class; and Rayden Garcia competed in the 242 lb. weight class.

Garcia would place sixth with a 540 lb. squat, 325 lb. bench press and a 525 lb. deadlift.

Alvarado would place ninth with a squat of 275 lbs., a bench press of 165 lbs., and a deadlift for 315. He would earn a total of 755 lbs.

Carrillo did not place as he did not record a deadlift in his three attempts. He posted a 405 lb. bench press and 225 lb. squat.

Salas would not record any attempts.

Salinas’ efforts would end at bench press as he could not record a deadlift total in his three attempts. He posted a 495 lb. squat and 275 lb. bench press.

Whiteface, Sundown, Morton and Ropes boys’ powerlifting were also represented in their regional meet. The teams competed In the THSPA Boys Region 1 Division 3 meet in Brownfield, March 6.

Whiteface would place second overall with five lifters competing.

Cash Crutcher competed in the 114 lb. weight class; Tyler Campbell and Parker Trejo each competed in the 165 lb. weight class; Damian Castaneda competed in the 220 lb. weight class; and Dominic Almager competed in the 275 lb. weight class.

Crutcher would earn first place in his weight class (114 lb. Class) with a total of 1,090 lbs. He would post a 400 lb. squat, 350 lb. bench press and a 340 lb. deadlift. Crutcher punched his ticket to compete at the state powerlifting meet along with earning Best Overall Light Platform Lifter, Best Squat and Best Bench Award.

Campbell would place fourth in his weight class (165 lb. Class) with a total of 1,255 lbs. He posted a 445 lb. bench press, 385 lb. squat and 425 lb. deadlift.

Trejo would place sixth in his weight class (165 lb. Class) with a total of 1,160 lbs. He would posted a 415 lb. squat, 295 lb. bench press and a 450 lb. deadlift.

Castaneda would place first in his weight class (220 lb. Class) with a total of 1,770 lbs. He posted a 685 lb. squat, 500 lb. bench press and a 585 lb. deadlift. Castaneda would also punch his ticket to the state powerlifting meet along with being awarded the Best Overall Heavy Platform Lifter, Best Bench and Best Deadlift awards.

Almager would place second in his weight class (275 lb. Class) with a total of 1,375 lbs., 10 lbs. shy of tying for first place. He would post a 500 lb. squat, 355 lb. bench press and a 520 lb. deadlift. His second place finish earns him a spot to compete at the state powerlifting meet.

Sundown placed fourth as a team in the regional meet. They had a total of 10 lifters compete.

J.C. Jenkins competed in the 114 lb. weight class; Jeremiah Reyes competed in the 132 lb. weight class; Corey Pormanes competed in the 148 lb. weight class; Trevor Bridges competed in the 181 lb. weight class; Andrew Rodriguez, Joseph O’Canas, Tyson Reyes and Brayden Longoria each competed in the 220 lb. weight class; Andrew Castillo and Zach Gonzales each competed in the 242 lb. weight class; and Jesus Rodriguez competed in the SHW (Super Heavy Weight) Class.

Jenkins would place fourth in his weight class (114 lb. Class) with a total of 735 lbs. He would post a 285 lb. squat, 135 lb. bench press and 315 lb. deadlift.

J. Reyes would place first in his weight class (132 lb. Class) with a total of 1,025 lbs. He would post a 420 lb. squat, 205 lb. bench press and 400 lb. deadlift. Taking the top spot in his class, Reyes would punch his ticket to compete at the state powerlifting tournament.

Pormanes would place seventh in his weight class (148 lb. Class) with a total of 950 lbs. He would post a 340 lb. squat, 275 lb. bench press and a 335 lb. deadlift.

Bridgers would not place in his weight class (181 lb. Class). He would post a 360 lb. squat but would fail to record a lift in the bench press with all three tries.

A. Rodriguez would place fifth in his weight class (220 lb. Class) with a total of 1,320. He would post a 560 lb. squat, 330 lb. bench press and a 430 lb. deadlift.

O’Canas would place ninth in his weight class (220 lb. Class) with a total of 1,165 lbs. He would post a 485 lb. squat, 265 lb. bench press and a 415 lb. deadlift.

T. Reyes would not place in his weight class (120 lb. Class). He would fail to record a lift in his three squatting attempts.

Longoria would not place in his weight class (120 lb. Class). He would post a 550 lb. squat and a 330 lb. bench press but would fail to record a deadlift attempt.

Castillo would place sixth in his weight class (242 lb. Class) with a total of 1,315 lbs. He would post a 450 lb. squat, 365 lb. bench press and a 500 lb. deadlift.

Gonzales would place eighth in his weight class (242 lb. Class) with a total of 1,215 lbs. He would post a 500 lb. squat, 290 lb. bench press and a 425 lb. deadlift.

Rodriguez would place first in his weight class (SHW) with a total of 1,595. He would post a 680 lb. squat, 390 lb. bench press and a 525 lb. deadlift. He would punch his ticket to compete in the state powerlifting meet.

Ropes would place ninth as a team and had three lifters compete. Gunnar Whitaker competed in the 123 lb. weight class; Victor Saenz competed in the 220 lb. weight class; and Tyler Harbuck competed in the 275 lb. weight class.

Whitaker would place second in his weight class (123 lb. Class) with a total of 950 lbs. He would post a 375 lb. squat, 225 lb. bench press and 350 lb. deadlift. His second place finish earned him a chance to compete at the state powerlifting meet.

Saenz would place second in his weight class (220 lb. Class) with a total of 1,450 lbs. He would post a 560 lb. squat, 330 lb. bench press and a 560 lb. deadlift. His second place finish earned him a chance to compete at the state powerlifting meet.

Harbuck placed seventh in his weight class (275 lb. Class) with a total of 1,245 lbs. He would post a 535 lb. squat, 275 lb. bench press and a 435 lb. deadlift.

Morton would have two lifters competing in the meet.

Christian Enriquez competed in the 148 lb. weight class and Abel Vizcarra competed in the 275 lb. weight class. Enriquez did not place in his weight class (148 lb. Class) as he did not record a squat amount in all three tries.

Vizcarra did not place in his weight class (275 lb. Class) as he did not record a deadlift amount in all three tries. He would post a 525 lb. squat and a 340 lb. bench press.

The state powerlifting meet will be held March 21-22, in Abilene at the Taylor County Expo Center.
