Local teams advance to area

The Whiteface Antelopes outscored the Klondike Cougars 14-6 over the last five minutes of the first half, then padded their lead in the third quarter on their way to a convincing 76-49 UIL Boys’ High School Bi-District Basketball Playoff win last Monday at Frenship High School in Wolfforth.

Klondike’s Kolby Pepper scored first with a basket less than 30 seconds into the game.

Whiteface’s Noah Rector, Jeremias Chavez and Jeremiah Rendon answered with a basket each, before Klondike got back on the scoreboard.

The Cougars managed to tie the Antelopes at 10 on a trey from Kevin King with 3:44 left.

Chavez hit a basket that put Whiteface back up 12-10 on the next possession.

Truett Thixton tied the score again at the 1:33 mark, prompting a 30 second timeout from the Whiteface bench.

Jared Quintanilla put Klondike up 14-12 almost immediately after the timeout. That’s where the score stood at the end of the first period.

The score went back and forth at the beginning of the second quarter. Rendon tied the score with seven minutes left, then Klondike went up 16-14.

Brighton Scoggins hit one of two free throws at the 6:31 mark, then Chavez got the rebound and put back to put the Antelopes up 17-16.

A trey from Quintanilla put Klondike up by two with six minutes left in the quarter. Gavin Baker answered with a three point shot of his own to put Whiteface back up 20-19 at the 5:34 mark.

While the scoring was back and forth, both teams were also playing strong defense creating dry spells. The next basket didn’t come until the 4:15 mark when Scoggins got a score in the paint to put the Antelopes up 22-19.

That ignited a 12-6 Whiteface run, putting the Antelopes up 3425 at half-time.

Klondike got within seven points on a basket at the beginning of the third quarter, but that was as close as they got the rest of the game.

Whiteface led 55-37 at the end of the third period and cruised to the win in the fourth.

Rendon led the Antelopes with 22 points. Scoggins and Chavez had 14 each. Rector had 10. Josh Whitehead had five points. Joel Fortner had four. Baker had three. Jaime Flores and Jeremiah Soliz had two each.
