This past Tuesday night, the Morton Indians basketball team hosted the Crosbyton Chiefs, losing 75-44, moving Morton to 0-2 and Crosbyton to 2-0 early in the season.
It was a tough night for the Indians as they were bested by the Chiefs in every statistical category aside from personal fouls, and while the result was lopsided, it deserves context.
“We are still beaten up from football and hope to get back three starters in the next few weeks,” Morton Basketball Head Coach Andrew Brockman said. “Our young guys have really improved, and we look forward to them continuing to get better.”
Injuries can often be detrimental to seasons, so shout out to the other players for stepping up into larger roles in the absence of key teammates.
A few of the players that did so against Crosbyton included EJ Rivas with 25 points on 11/29 shooting, going 1/11 from three and 2/5 from the free throw line, adding 13 steals, nine rebounds and four assists.
Britton Boggs had 13 points on 5/18 shooting, going 1/9 from three and 2/4 from the free throw line, adding 11 rebounds, a block and a steal.
Rafael Acevedo recorded three points, eight rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block, along with Masyn Enriquez who had three points and two rebounds.
It was a hard-fought effort by the team off the backs of those performances, which they’ll seek to grow from quickly before returning to action over the weekend for a tournament in Nazareth.
The Nazareth Invitational opponent pool includes Olton, Panhandle, Muleshoe, Naz, Hereford, Abernathy, Henrietta, Ascension, Shallowater, Texline and Tulia.
