Panthers pounce on Bulldogs, 80-45

The Anton Bulldogs hosted the #9 ranked Whitharral Panthers for a district basketball game this past Tuesday night, resulting in a dominant 80-45 win for the Panthers.

The Panthers’ eighth straight win improves their record to 19-9 overall and 8-0 in district play, which puts them first in the 1A District 5 standings.

“It was another good game for us. We started competitive and our intensity never dropped. We’re hungry for more dominant wins,” Panthers Head Basketball Coach Brett Berger said.

Standouts for the Panthers included Nate Sansom with 22 points on 8/13 shooting and 6/8 free throws made, adding eight rebounds, two steals and an assist, Hudson Dobrovolny with 17 points on 8/13 shooting, adding 13 rebounds, two steals and an assist, and Damian Rodriguez with 16 points on 7/11 shooting, adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Other Whitharral stat lines included Brent Robinson with 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal, Greg Johnson with five points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal, Cooper Burns with three points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Christian Reina with two points, one rebound and one assist.

On the Bulldogs’ side of things, scorers included Shooter Campos with 18 points, Caleb Carlock with seven points, Isaiah Alafa and Xavi Avalos both with five points, Tiny Juarez with four points, and Zian Martinez and Kaden Starns both with three points.

Following the blowout loss, Bulldogs Head Basketball Coach Ezekiel Clay gave his thoughts on the game.

“Turnovers killed us. Most of their points were transition points from bad passes around the perimeter,” Coach Clay said. “We were unable to take care of the ball or control the glass, and that won them the game.”

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 13-12 overall and 3-5 in district play, which ties them for fourth in the 2A District 5 standings. They’ll need to win their final two district games against Amherst and Meadow to make the playoffs.

They host Amherst over the weekend, meanwhile the Panthers travel on the road to face Cotton Center.
