Roughettes best Lady Eagles in playoff seeding bout

The Sundown Roughettes and Ropes Lady Eagles squared off in a district basketball playoff seeding bout at Levelland High School this past Thursday, resulting in the Roughettes winning 45-29.

The game was tightly contested through three quarters, as Sundown led 31-29 after the third, but the Roughettes would fully dominate the fourth, 14-0, to earn the huge win.

“The poise that the girls showed against Ropes was incredible,” Roughettes Head Basketball Coach Jared Neighbors said. “It was a back and forth, close game for three quarters and the girls never wavered from the task at hand. We wanted to head into the playoffs with momentum and the way we have been playing since after Christmas, I believe we accomplished that for sure. There are still things we need to clean up, but the Roughettes understand why we play together, play to win, and most importantly, play for Him.”

They certainly have big momentum coming off the win, and a big reason why was Camry Jourden, who led the Roughettes with 17 points behind two threepointers made and a ¾ free throw effort, adding four assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Her efforts were complimented by Kyndal Taggart with eight points, six rebounds and two steals, Avyian McGlasson with seven points, four steals, two rebounds, one assist and one block, and Kaytlin Clausen with seven points, two assists and two rebounds.

The win improves the Roughettes to 23-12 overall and 10-3 in district play, which not only secures them second in the final 2A District 5 standings, but more importantly, the top 2A District 5 Big School playoff seed.

Meanwhile on the Lady Eagles side of things, the loss drops them to 21-11 overall and 9-4 in district play, which locks them in at third in the final 2A District 5 standings.

Scorers for the Lady Eagles included Zailyn Wylie with 10 points, Rylie Lester with eight points behind two three-pointers made, Brooklyn Hogg with six points, Alyssa Welch and Sydney Brooks both with two points, and Kamdyn Matus with one point.

It was a tough result to fall short for the top playoff seed, but the Lady Eagles can walk away with their heads held high knowing that they were neck and neck with a burning hot team and just had a lackluster fourth quarter.

Both teams are back in action early in the week for their first-round/Bi-District playoff matchups, with the Roughettes looking to stay rolling, and the Lady Eagles looking to respond to the disappointing result.

The Roughettes face McCamey at Grady High School, while the Lady Eagles face Wink at Denver City High School.
