The Sundown Roughettes hosted Tahoka Friday night and ended the season with a lopsided 63-33 victory to finish second in the district.
The Sundown defense started out strong, creating havoc on the Lady Bulldog offense and holding them to three points.
The steals and turnovers fueled a 20 point first quarter for Sundown led by five points from Natalie Urias and four from Emma Holdman. Karlee Riley and Kaydence Loftin each added a three-pointer to the scoring line.
The offense slowed down in the second scoring only 13 points with Riley, Loftin, and Yaya Lopez hitting threes and Tahoka added seven points for a 33-10 halftime score.
The third quarter saw the teams evenly matched as Sundown scored 12, seven of which came from Shea Beadles, to the Lady Bulldogs 11 and the score was 45-21 headed into the fourth.
The Roughette defense allowed 12 points to Tahoka in the final frame but the offense turned up the heat with an 18 point effort with Allie McCormick leading the way with five points followed by Aria Hogan with four.
With the 63-33 victory the Roughettes will play Anthony at a time and place still to be determined.
The Sundown Roughnecks lost a home game to the Tahoka Bulldogs Friday night, 62-46.
Sundown started slowly, only scoring six points in the first quarter, while allowing 13 to a Bulldog team that passed the ball very well in transition and to cutters in the half court offense.
The Roughnecks improved offensively in the second with an eight point effort, but Tahoka kept up the offensive pressure with 10 points and the halftime score was 23-14 in the Bulldogs favor.
Sundown surged out of halftime, erasing the nine point deficit and taking a two point lead with an aggressive, frenetic defense that fueled a 19 point effort but near the end of the third the Bulldogs rallied and started scoring. The Roughneck’s shots stopped finding the net and the lead disappeared. Sundown was behind again, 41-33.
The final quarter belonged to Tahoka as they outscored Sundown 21-13 to cement the 6246 loss for the Roughnecks.
The Roughnecks hosted the Plains Cowboys on Friday night and lost a close game 37-39.
Plains took a 16-10 lead after a seesaw first quarter in which Adan Escamilla scored six of the Sundown points.
The Roughnecks found their offense in the second quarter behind seven points from Noah Peralez and added 16 points to their total, while the defense held Plains to four points and Sundown had a 26-20 lead at halftime.
The Roughnecks outscored the Cowboys 9-7 in the third quarter to take an eight point lead into the final period but the offense went cold that combined with turnovers and empty trips to the basket gave Plains a 12-10 advantage in the quarter, which was enough for a two point victory for the Cowboys.
The Roughnecks fell to 5-6 in district play and traveled to Ropesville to face a 3-7 Eagles team Tuesday. Sundown now sits in fourth place.
