Sundown falls to New Home

Sundown allowed the least amount of points all season against New Home, surrendering only 14 points.

Despite the defensive effort from Sundown’s defense, the Roughnecks did not scoreany points, falling 14-0 against the New Home Leopards.

The difference between Sundown’s total offensive yards (132) and New Home’s total offensive yards (213) was an 81-yard separation.

The Roughnecks offense dealt with moving parts as injuries caused their running back to play quarterback.

Sundown stalled New Home’s offense as they kept the Leopards scoreless in the second and fourth quarters.

The Roughnecks came up with an interception and a fumble against the Leopards’ offense.

“Our kids defensively played lights out,” Sundown’s head coach Brannon Rodgers said. “They held them to 213 yards and one touchdown, basically. Just really played well, bottling up New Home’s offense.”

This loss marks Sundown as 0-1 in District 3-2A, but coach Rodgers believes the defensive performance versus New Home can be duplicated and produce wins in their district.

“We’ve been able to give ourselves a chance to win games because the defense is playing so well,” Rodgers said. “Keeping scores low has been a big thing for us to be able to do going in district.”

With a bye week, this is seen as a perfect time to heal up and be ready for the rest of district play.

“The biggest thing is healing up this week,” Rodger said. “Do a little bit more recovery and lighter pad work, but a lot more focus on details.”

The Roughnecks will return to action at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 versus New Deal at home. New Deal is coming off a loss versus a then 0-6 Abernathy team, which sparks some confidence in the Roughnecks to believe anyone has “a chance to win a game on Friday night,” Rodgers said about the district being an even-level playing field.
