Huffines distributes $1.3M in sales tax allocations

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines said many cities and counties can reduce property taxes due to increased sales tax revenue as local governments will receive $1.3 billion in sales tax allocations for September, 7.6% more than in September 2025.

These allocations are based on sales made in July by businesses that report taxes monthly.

“The increased sales tax revenue being returned to local governments is an indicator that many local entities may have an opportunity to use these additional funds to help reduce property taxes,” Huffines said. “Lower property taxes are one of the most effective ways to make housing more affordable and ease the financial burden Texans face with gas, groceries, and other everyday costs.”

In Hockley County, Levelland received $546,166, up 10.65% from September 2025. Anton received $46,085, up 419.02% from last year; Smyer received $8,451, up 42.11%; and Sundown received $43,354, up 31.15%. Ropesville received $16,139, down -4.98%; and Opdyke West saw a -81.01% decrease, receiving $501.

In Cochran County, Morton increased by 42.23%, receiving $20,646; and Whiteface receiving $3,015, an increase of 5.99%.

Across the state, cities received $816.5 million in sales tax allocation up 6.2% from last year; counties received $81.6 million, up 7.8%; transit systems, $267.8 million, up 6.9%; and special purpose districts, $135.8 million, up 9.8%.
