Local high school students interested in continuing their culinary education at the college level are invited to South Plains College’s come-and-go registration and tour event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 2 at the college’s Lubbock Career and Technical Center.
All Region 17 high school seniors and culinary arts teachers are invited to participate, and those interested must RSVP at nosuna@southplainscollege.edu by April 18. Visiting students can fully register for SPC’s culinary program before leaving the center.
Students who want to register during the event must apply to SPC a few weeks before the event. Natalie Osuna, SPC’s program coordinator for culinary arts, will be available to discuss schedule options and registration.
Attendees can also participate in interactive demonstrations and hands-on culinary tasks led by current SPC students and chef instructors in the college’s lab spaces.
“We are excited to welcome new culinary arts students to our program every fall,” Osuna said. “This event will be a good opportunity to meet chef instructors and current students, see the culinary facility and leave with a set class schedule for Fall 2025.”
The culinary arts program at SPC was created to produce students with a wide range of culinary skills that will translate into employment opportunities in the industry. SPC developed the culinary arts program in response to workforce projections that restaurant and food industry employment will grow due to new and replacement workers in the Lubbock area.
The program offers two certificates of proficiency: a fundamental skills certificate that can be completed in two semesters and an advanced culinary and baking certificate that can be completed with two additional semesters of training. The program also offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in culinary arts.
